Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University volleyball head coach Danijela Tomic has announced the 2016 fall schedule, which will open up with not one, but two home tournaments on Aug. 26-27 and Sept. 2-3, and a total of 15 home matches overall on the season inside the Stroh Center.
"We are excited to announce our 2016 schedule that has a total of 15 home matches on it, the most we have had at home since the 2005 season. We are especially excited to be able to host two home tournaments and add two mid-week non-conference matches with quality opponents," stated Coach Tomic. "Playing in the Stroh Center always gives our team a welcomed home court advantage and this year our fans will get a chance to see the team in action more than in the past few years. Our non-conference schedule is well balanced, yet still challenging and will prepare our team well for tough MAC competition."
The Falcons will kick-off the season with the Bowling Green Hampton Inn Invitational on Aug. 26-27 at home inside the Stroh Center. The two-day season opening tournament will include a total of four teams in Louisville, Virginia Commonwealth (VCU), Oakland and BGSU. The two-day event will consist of four matches on Friday, Aug. 26, and will conclude with two matches on Saturday, Aug. 27.
The following weekend, Sept. 2-3, Coach Tomic's squad will host the BGSU Invitational at the Stroh Center. The multi-team event will include IPFW and Northern Kentucky along with the Falcons. BGSU will host IPFW on Friday night, Sept. 2, as the lone match of the night to kick-off the tournament. On Saturday, Sept. 3, Northern Kentucky will take on IPFW at 12:30 p.m., before the Falcons will host the Norse of NKU at 5 p.m. to conclude the round robin tri-match tournament.
BGSU will continue its long home stand to start the 2016 season with a non-conference midweek match up with the Marshall Thundering Herd on Wednesday, Sept. 7.
After playing their first six matches at home, the Falcons will hit the road on Sept. 9-10 at the EIU Panther Classic hosted by Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois. The Falcons, who will play a trio of matches over the two-day tournament, will take on Louisiana Tech in the first match of the day on Friday, Sept. 9, and will then return to action against host EIU and Drake on Saturday, Sept. 10.
The Orange and Brown will then step out of tournament play and return home to host Valparaiso on Tuesday, Sept. 13, before wrapping up its non-conference schedule on the road at the UIC Invitational in Chicago, Illinois on Sept. 16-17. At the UIC Invitational, the Falcons are slated to play UMass Lowell on Friday, Sept. 16, and both SIU-Edwardsville and UIC on Saturday, Sept. 17.
Bowling Green will then set its sights on the 2016 MAC season, as the Falcons' final 16 matches of the regular season schedule will come against conference foes.
BGSU will play three of its first four MAC contests at home inside the Stroh Center, as the Falcons will host Miami on Sept. 22, hit the road to take on Northern Illinois on Sept. 24, and then return home to northwest Ohio to host MAC East foes Ohio on Sept. 30 and Kent State on Oct. 1.
The Falcons will then hit the road for a four-match road swing over the next two weeks, as Coach Tomic's squad will visit Akron (Oct. 7), Buffalo (Oct. 8), Eastern Michigan (Oct. 14), and Central Michigan (Oct. 15), before returning home to take on MAC West opponents Ball State (Oct. 21) and Toledo (Oct. 22) in cross-divisional play.
Following a return match at Miami on Oct. 27, the Orange and Brown will welcome Western Michigan to the Stroh Center on Oct. 29 to conclude its play against the MAC West Division.
The final four matches of the regular season will come against the MAC East, as BGSU will hit the road to take on both Kent State (Nov. 4) and Ohio (Nov. 5), before wrapping up the regular season slate with home contests versus Buffalo on Nov. 11 and Akron on Nov. 12.
The 2016 MAC Volleyball Championships will take place from Nov. 17-20 and will be hosted by Northern Illinois in DeKalb, Illinois.
