Garda And Sunjic Named MAC East Players Of The Week

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Two seniors on the Bowling Green State University volleyball team, Madeline Garda and Jelena Sunjic, were named MAC East Players of the Week, the conference office announced Monday (Sept. 12) afternoon. Garda was named the MAC East's Defensive Player of the Week, while Sunjic was tabbed as the MAC East's Offensive Player of the Week.
Both players led Bowling Green to a 3-1 week, which included a perfect 3-0 weekend at the EIU Panther Classic. Sunjic was named the tournament's MVP, while Garda was named to the All-Tournament Team.
In BGSU's final win of the weekend over Drake, Garda broke the school's record for digs in a single match with 40. She currently leads the country in digs/set with 6.09.
For the week, Garda posted an astonishing 118 digs, which is good enough for a 6.94 digs/set average. She averaged 29.5 digs/match, and also racked up 11 assists and four aces on the week. In the final three matches of the week, Garda posted at least 33 digs. The senior notched 37 digs versus Louisiana Tech, and then followed that up the next day with a 33-dig effort at Eastern Illinois, and concluded the invitational with a program-best 40 digs versus Drake.
Sunjic recorded double-digit kills in all four matches, posted at least 16 kills three times, and hit at least .400 three times, as well. For the week, Sunjic hit a staggering .402 with a total of 61 kills (3.59 kills/set), while also registering 72.0 points. The native of Metkovic, Croatia hit .652 (16-1-23) at Eastern Illinois, .486 (18-1-35) vs. Louisiana Tech, .400 (10-2-20) versus Marshall, and .224 (17-6-49) against Drake.
The Falcons host Valparaiso tomorrow (Sept. 13) at 7 p.m. inside of the Stroh Center. BGSU will then play three matches over Sept. 16-17 at the UIC Invitational.
