September 17, 2016 | Women's Golf
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Falcons will return to the links at a familiar event in the Cardinal Classic hosted by Ball State at The Players Club in Yorktown, Ind. on Sept. 19-20. The 2016 Cardinal Classic will mark the third straight year that the Falcons have competed in the event, as BGSU earned a third-place team finish in the fall of 2014, as well as a fourth-place team finish last season.
"There is a great field of teams, including many from the MAC, at this year's Cardinal Classic," Bowling Green women's golf head coach Stephanie Young said. "The Players Club is a challenging course and we look forward to the test this week."
For the second time in the tournament's 15-year existence, the 2016 Cardinal Classic will feature 54 holes of play at the par 72, 6,204 yards golf course at The Players Club. The tournament will consist of 36 holes, or two rounds of play, on Monday, Sept. 19, beginning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. The final 18 holes of play will start with a 9 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday, Sept. 20. The 2015 Cardinal Classic was the first time the event was held as a 54-hole competition.
BGSU will be one of 16 teams in the tournament field this season which also includes Austin Peay, Bradley, Central Michigan, Dayton, Drake, Eastern Kentucky, Fort Wayne, IUPUI, Northern Illinois, Northern Kentucky, Ohio, Toledo, Western Illinois, Western Michigan, and host Ball State. Additionally, Indiana will have three individuals competing.
The Falcons, who are coming off a seventh place finish at the Redbird Invitational two weeks ago, will send out a lineup consisting of Erin Fahey, Brooke Nolte, Fran Rodriguez, Madelynn Swank and Sarah Kern.
Fahey will be playing in her second straight event for the Falcons this fall when she tees the ball up at the Cardinal Classic in the number one spot. The sophomore carded a low round of 72 two weeks ago and turned in 54-hole score of 223, +7 for a tie for ninth overall at the Redbird Invitational, in which she was third in the lineup.
Freshman Nolte also bumped up in the lineup, from a fourth spot at the Redbird Invitational two weeks ago, to number two for the Cardinal Classic. The Melissa, Texas native finished second on the Falcons squad in her collegiate debut with rounds of 81, 78 and 73 at the Redbird Invitational, leading to a tie for 31st overall with a score of 232, +16.
Sliding into the number three position this week in the Falcons' lineup is Rodriguez, and will be the senior's second event of the fall season. The Flower Mound, Texas native recorded a 54-hole score of 235, +19 at the Redbird Invitational for a 43rd place finish, and turned in a 78.33 stroke average over the three rounds of play.
Junior Swank will come in the number four spot on the Falcons lineup, after tying for 44th at the Redbird Invitational. The Clarenden Hills, Ill. native carded rounds of 80, 79, and 77 over the course of the two day invite for a score of 236, +20.
Rounding out the Falcons lineup will be sophomore Kern, who will be making her collegiate debut at the Cardinal Classic. Prior to joining the Bowling Green squad, the Springboro, Ohio native was named First Team All-Conference and won the Ohio Junior World event on two occasions. Kern also placed second at two other Ohio Junior World events she competed in and won the Ohio International Optimist Tournament, in addition to posting a top-10 finish at a American Junior Golf Association event.
Eastern Kentucky won the Cardinal Classic tournament last year with a score of 867, +3, defeating Eastern Michigan by a 13 stroke difference. The Eagles had won the tournament four times, including 2014, while Ball State has won it on three separate occasions. Butler and Southern Illinois also own one team title apiece.
"There will be live scoring on Golfstat every three holes, which is a fun feature for all our fans and one that I hope they take advantage of to cheer the team on!" added Coach Young.
Live scoring will be available throughout the two days of play, with updates every three holes, at http://www.golfstatresults.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=participants&tid=11132.
