Women's Golf Looks To Defend Title At Redbird Invitational

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's golf team will tee-off its 2016 fall season on Labor Day weekend, Sept. 4-5, at the Redbird Invitational hosted by Illinois State University at the Weibring Golf Club in Normal, Ill.
This weekend's season opener will mark the sixth straight year in which the Bowling Green women's golf team will open up its fall slate at the Redbird Invitational. The Falcons won the 2015 team title out of the 16 team field by eight strokes, carding rounds of 308, 304 and 293 for a combined 54-hole team score of 905, +41. Bowling Green also claimed second-place overall at the Redbird Invitational in 2012 and third-place in 2013.
The two-day event will include a total of 54 holes of play on the par-72 course with two rounds of play on Sunday, Sept. 4, and a final round of 18 holes scheduled for a shotgun start on Monday, Sept. 5.
The Falcons will send out a diverse lineup led by seniors Fran Rodriguez and Mikayla Baer. Joining the pair will be junior Madelynn Swank, sophomore Erin Fahey and freshmen Jessica Madry and Brooke Nolte.
As one of just two seniors on the team, Rodriguez will look to wrap up her Falcon career on a high note in the 2016-17 season. As a junior, Rodriguez recorded a stroke average of 79.00 over 26 rounds of play in 10 events on the year. In the first round of play at the 2016 MAC Championships, Rodriguez turned in a season-low round of 72 in the first round of play, and also carded a round of 73 on two occasions, both at the Redbird Invitational. Over the course of the 2015-16 campaign, Rodriguez recorded four top-25 place finishes, including a fifth-place finish with a 54-hole score of 224, +8 at the 2015 Redbird Invitational.
Fellow senior Baer posted a stroke average of 78.24 over 29 rounds of play for the past season, in which she participated in all 11 tournaments for the Falcons, including the Women's Mid-American Match Play Challenge. Baer carded a round low of 71 in the final round of play at the 2015 Redbird Invitational, which remains tied for the eighth lowest 18-hole round by a Falcon in Bowling Green women's golf history. In addition to three other top-25 finishes last season, Baer finished in a tie for ninth-place overall with a 54-hole score of 228, +12 at the 2015 Redbird Invitational.
Junior Swank will hope to gain momentum at the upcoming Redbird Invitational to build off of her sophomore season. Last year, Swank turned in a stroke average of 80.33 over six rounds and two events of play on the year. At the Rio Verde Invitational, Swank carded a round low of 76, in addition to a round of 77, ultimately leading to a 54-hole score of 240, +24.
Sophomore Fahey came on strong for the Falcons last season in her freshman campaign, making a huge impact on the Bowling Green women's golf program. Fahey posted a stroke average of 77.17 over 29 rounds and 11 tournaments, ultimately recording the lowest single season stroke average by a freshman, and second lowest overall, in Bowling Green women's golf history. At last season's Redbird Invitational, Fahey carded a low round of 72 in the final round of play to tie for 29th with a 54-hole score of 234, +18. Fahey closed out her debut season by tallying six top-25 place finishes on the year.
Freshman Madry will be a new face on the course for the Falcons, with her first collegiate appearance being Labor Day's Redbird Invitational. Madry comes to the Falcons from William B. Travis High School in Houston, Texas, where she led her team to four straight regional championship tournaments with four straight second-place team finishes at the District Championship Tournament from 2013-2016. Individually, Madry finished third-place overall at the 2016 District Championships and recorded a second-place finish overall in 2014 as a sophomore, leading to Most Improved Golfer award honors.
Joining Madry in her collegiate debut will be fellow freshman Nolte. The Melissa, Texas native played for Melissa High School and was a four-time team captain, four-time regional champion, and four-time district champion. Nolte was also named to the Texas All-State First Team on four occasions and earned Melissa High School MVP honors all four years of attending. Most recently, Nolte was the 2016 Texas High School Class 4A Individual Runner-Up.
The 2016 Redbird Invitational will commence with 8:30 a.m. central time shotgun starts on Sunday, Sept. 4, followed by the second round of play the same day. The Invitational will round out with the third session on Monday, Sept. 5 beginning with an 8:30 a.m. central time shotgun.
