RACE RESULTS
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Bowling Green State University men's cross country team competed in the 61st annual Joe Piane Invitational at the University of Notre Dame on Friday, Sept. 30. The Falcons participated in the Gold Division race, which consisted of 24 teams and lasted a distance of five miles on Notre Dame's Burke Golf Course. BGSU finished eighth, and sophomore Noah Schaub set a new personal record as the Falcons' leading runner.
Â
"I thought we ran pretty well for this time of year. The guys showed up and ran very tough in a meet that had the time pushed up and had less than ideal conditions for the last half or so with wind and rain," said men's cross country assistant coach Chuck Wentz." We had three guys get PRs, and Kohl was less than a second off of his PR while working back from an injury. It was a very solid team effort and a great indicator of where we are."Â
Bowling Green's 23 opponents included four teams who earned spots in this week's USTFCCCA regional rankings, one Mid-American Conference school, and schools from the Atlantic Coast Conference and Southeastern Conference.
Â
The Falcons' 264 points resulted in an eighth-place finish, and they defeated three of their four ranked opponents. Indiana State (13th in the Great Lakes Region) placed ninth with 285 points. Oakland (10th in the Great Lakes) finished 12th overall, and Belmont (12th in the South Region) earned a 13th-place finish. BGSU also defeated MAC rival Central Michigan, who finished 18th, and SEC foe Vanderbilt, who finished 20th.
Â
Noah Schaub was Bowling Green's top runner and finished 28th out of the race's 183 competitors. He completed the five mile run, which is the equivalent of 8046.72 meters, in 25:24.1. That is 33 seconds faster than Schaub ran the 8,000-meter race two weeks ago at the Mel Brodt Collegiate Invitational and is faster than any of his other career 8K races.
Â
Sophomore Jonathan Wenning placed 29th overall and crossed the finish just five-tenths of a second after Schaub. His time (25:24.6) would also be an 8K personal record and is over one minute faster than his 2016 Mel Brodt time.
Â
Sophomore Tyler Phillips and junior Kohl Taberner also ran sub-26:00 times. Phillips was the third Falcon to cross the finish and placed 36th overall in 25:27.4. His 8K time at the Mel Brodt two weeks ago was 26:58.3. Taberner, who has an 8K personal record of 25:45.6, earned a top-third finish by taking 61st place with a time of 25:46.1.
Â
Nick Voth, Jacob Schenten and Kyle Repetto were the Falcons' other competitors at Notre Dame. Voth's time (26:20.6) was an improvement of 34 seconds over his time at the Mel Brodt. Schenten finished the event in 27:01.4, while Repetto raced for the first time this season and earned a time of 27:06.0.
Â
BGSU's next meet takes place in Terra Haute, Ind. on Monday, Oct. 17. The Falcons will compete at the Indiana State Pre-Nationals, the site of the 2016 NCAA Division I National Championship.
