NOTE OF THE DAY
Last season, the Falcons had a total of 271 offensive rebounds, an average of fewer than 10 (9.82, since you asked) per game. This winter, the Falcons have averaged 15.60 offensive boards per game, with a total of 234 through the first 15 games.
A TRADITION OF SUCCESS
Bowling Green has won 14 MAC regular-season championships and 11 league tournament titles, the highest totals among all conference teams. Prior to the injury-plagued season of 2014-15, the Falcons had won at least 20 games in a MAC-record 11 consecutive seasons. BG won at least 24 games in nine-straight seasons during that span, losing just 18 total games in MAC regular-season play during those nine years.
The Falcons made 10 consecutive national postseason trips from 2005-14, with five NCAA Championships appearances and five trips to the WNIT during that time. The 2006-07 team was the most successful in MAC history, winning a league-record 31 games en route to an NCAA 'Sweet Sixteen' appearance.
Overall, BGSU has won 20 or more games 19 times, the highest total among all Mid-American Conference women's basketball-playing institutions.
SCOUTING WMU
Western Michigan enters Wednesday's game with an overall record of 11-3, and the Broncos are 2-1 in the MAC after an 61-56 loss at Ball State on Saturday. That loss snapped a 10-game winning streak, the program's longest since 1986-87. Western's only other two losses this year came to Michigan State and Michigan back in November. The Broncos are 5-1 at home, 5-2 on the road and 1-0 in neutral-site games this year to date. Redshirt junior center Marley Hill has a team-leading 16.4 points per game, and also has 5.9 rebounds per contest. Sophomore forward Breanna Mobley is averaging a double-double, with 14.1 ppg and a Bronco-best 10.6 rpg, while senior guard Meredith Shipman has 10.9 ppg and has hit a team-high 28 three-pointers. Sophomore guard Deja Wimby has 9.9 ppg and paces the club in both assists (5.6) and steals (2.7). Head coach Shane Clipfell welcomed back 10 letterwinners, including two starters, from a Bronco team that went 17-15 overall and 8-10 in the MAC a year ago.
THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Western Michigan, 35-27, in the all-time series between the teams, but the Broncos have captured each of the last four meetings. Last year, Western dealt the Falcons a 74-45 defeat at University Arena (Jan. 6, 2016), then picked up a 65-49 win at the Stroh Center (Feb. 10, 2016). BGSU's last win over the Broncos was a 72-50 verdict at the Stroh three years ago (Feb. 5, 2014). The Falcons' last win in Kalamazoo came on Feb. 4, 2012, by a 67-56 score. BGSU is 18-11 in home games (2-1 at the Stroh Center), 14-15 in road contests and 3-1 in neutral-site meetings vs. Western over the years. Jennifer Roos is 2-5 against the Broncos as a collegiate head coach.
UP NEXT
Following the WMU game, the Falcons will return home for the next three contests, beginning with a Saturday (Jan. 14) game against preseason MAC favorite Central Michigan. That game, the second half of a BGSU hoops doubleheader at the Stroh Center, is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. Then, the Falcons will host defending MAC Tournament champion Buffalo (Jan. 18) and Ball State (Jan. 21), before returning to the road for the final two January games.
