Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University track and field team won nine events to defeat Toledo and Wright State in the BG Opener at Perry Fieldhouse Saturday. The Falcons scored 117 team points, followed by Toledo with 97 and Wright State with 51.
The Falcons won the BG Opener for the second time in three years. Eight student-athletes won eight individual events and Bowling Green added a first-place finish in the 1600 relay to cap the day.
"We had a solid day," BGSU Track and Field Coach Lou Snelling said. "There were a bunch of solid starts that we can build on for the rest of the season. At a meet like this, our depth was nice to see and it will be interesting to see how that plays out over the next few months."
The Falcons were particularly dominant in the throws, taking the top three spots in both the shot put and the weight throw. In the latter event, the Falcons earned the top four finishes.
Aliyah Gustafson won the shot and placed third in the weight throw, while Purdue transfer Elizabeth Iversen did the reverse by winning the weight throw and finishing third in the shot put. Makenzie Wheat was second in the shot put and Kayla Velasquez was runner-up in the weight throw. Freshman Kaila Butler finished fourth in the weight throw.
In the sprints, BGSU won the 200, 300 and 400. Freshman Mis'cha Sellers posted a time of 26.01 seconds for victory in the 200 and junior Cortisha Short won the 300 in 41.22 seconds. Senior Taylor Rambo posted a victory in the 400 with a time of 58.28 seconds. In the 300, the Falcons swept the top three spots.
The Falcons saw another freshman earn a victory in the 60 hurdles as Chasatea Brown ran the event in 9.44 seconds.
The Falcons also won two of the three jumping events. Raven Porter picked up a high jump victory at 1.60 meters and Kyla Paster was first in the triple jump at 11.39 meters.
Dorresha Green, Gabrielle Edwards, Brianna Tidmore and Brianna Johnson ran the 1600 relay in 4:04.95 for a first-place result. BGSU was also second with the team of Camerone Bryant, Paige Geatz, Rachel Stute and Rambo.
