Cross Country Looks To Continue Success At MAC Championships
October 26, 2017 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Bowling Green State University's men's and women's cross country teams are back in action this weekend (Saturday, Oct. 28) as they compete in the Mid-American Conference Championships hosted by Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. The meet will be held at the Miami University Cross Country Course, with the men kicking off the day at 11 a.m. with their 8K race, followed by the women's 6K at noon.
Preseason Polls
In the preseason coaches' poll, both squads were pegged to finish third overall. Last season, the women finished with a third place finish backed by Walny's second place finish and strong performances by Rachel Durbin, Elena Lancioni and Kelsie Mothersead. The men placed fifth overall.
Continuing The Climb
The men's fifth place finish at the MAC Championships last year was their best finish since 1995 when they finished first overall. After finishing last in 2014, they have continued to climb steadily up the ranks, from seventh in 2015 to fifth last year. With the polls expecting them to finish third, they hope to continue that upward trend.
Scouting The Competition
The Falcons have already faced six MAC opponents head on this season in their previous races. At the Pre-Nationals Invitational two weeks ago, both Walny and Noah Schaub finished first among all MAC participants. Also at the Pre-Nationals event, the BGSU men's team finished first among MAC opponents while the women finished third among conference foes. In their only dual meet of the season, the Falcons faced the Rockets of Toledo in the Mel Brodt Invitational. The men topped the Rockets backed by top three performances by Schaub (first) and Jonathan Wenning (third). The women fell to Toledo with Elena Lancioni finishing first for the Falcons.
What They're Saying
"I like the consistency and expectations our teams have shown this season and over the past few years," head coach Lou Snelling said.
"We'll see a young team out there so it will be good for us to gain lots of experience to use in the years moving forward," he added.
Last Time Out
The Falcons are coming off a stellar Pre-Nationals Invitational in which 13 athletes saw season or career best performances. For the second consecutive meet, Walny also set a BGSU school record. She completed the 6K in a record 20:25.
Award Winner
For the first time in his career, junior Schaub was awarded MAC Runner of the Week (Oct. 17). There were three MAC schools competing out of the field of 24, where Schaub finished tenth overall and first among members of the MAC.
