EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Bowling Green State University swimming and diving team combined to win seven of 16 events but ultimately fell to Michigan State in the final dual meet of the semester. The Spartans captured victory with a 186-114 final score at McCaffree Pool on the MSU campus. Sarah Hennings and Talisa Lemke each captured a pair of victories, and in Lemke's case, she once again broke her own school records in both diving events. Maddy Andrews, Jordan Andrusak, and Franziska Wohlert also won individual swimming events for BGSU.
Lemke's ability to break school records has become a weekly feat at this juncture. The 2016-17 MAC Freshman Diver of the Year originally set the school records last season with cumulative scores of 293.15 in the one-meter at George Washington and 323.15 in the three-meter at Miami. This season as a sophomore, she initially eclipsed those marks at Eastern Michigan by improving to 298.20 in the one-meter and 323.70 in the three-meter. Last week, she once again raised the standard in the one-meter, this time with a 299.09. This week, Lemke once again broke both records. In the one-meter, she became the first Falcon to ever surpass the 300-point mark with a 300.97. She then shattered the three-meter record by posting a 339.22. Lemke won both diving events against the Spartans and has now earned sweeps in four of the Falcons' five meets this season. Her eight individual event victories leads the team.
Freshman Sarah Hennings earned her fourth and fifth individual wins of the season by sweeping the butterfly events. In the 200 butterfly, she set a personal record and established a new team best for the season by finishing in 2:05.08. That defeated MSU's Emily Brunett by 0.95 seconds. Hennings also won the 100 butterfly (0:56.11) by a full second over Iana Wolff.
Three other BGSU swimmers captured individual event victories. Maddy Andrews won in the 200 freestyle for the fourth time this season, as she captured a close race against MSU's Olivia Chick. The victory margin was just 0.09 seconds. Andrews also set a personal record and new team-best time this season in the 500 freestyle (5:07.51). Jordan Andrusak won the 200 IM and is now 2-for-2 when swimming that event. Her time (2:07.11) is the best by any Falcon in the 200 IM this season. She also set personal records in the 200 backstroke and 200 freestyle. Finally, Franziska Wohlert earned her first victory of the season by taking the 200 backstroke in 2:04.39. She also finished second in the 100 backstroke (0:57.90). Both backstroke times were team-bests for this season.
Aside from the seven winners, the Falcons also had three second-place and four third-place swims for a total of 14 top-three finishes.
