BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University swimming and diving team hits the road for the first time in the 2017-18 season when it travels to Oxford, Ohio on Saturday (Nov. 4) for a Mid-American Conference dual meet against the Miami RedHawks. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. and will be held at Miami's Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center. The Falcons arrive at this meet with a 3-1 record. BGSU started 3-0 with wins over St. Francis, Xavier, and Tiffin, then fell to Eastern Michigan in the MAC opener. Miami is currently 0-2 following dual meet losses to Purdue and Akron. Bowling Green seeks its second win in three years over Miami. Two years ago, they defeated the RedHawks 151-149 at Cooper Pool. Last year, Miami won 217-83 in Oxford.
LAST TIME OUT
Bowling Green began its slate of meets against MAC foes last Saturday (Oct. 28) when it hosted Eastern Michigan. The Eagles swam away with a 207-93 victory in the dual meet at Cooper Pool. Sophomore diver Talisa Lemke was the star of the meet for the Falcons, as she won both the one-meter and three-meter diving events. In the process, she set new BGSU records for both, breaking the marks she set during the 2016-17 season. She won the one-meter with a total of 298.20, breaking her old record of 293.15 set at George Washington. Her 323.70 mark in the three-meter event eclipsed the 323.15 standard she set in last year's meet at Miami. Maddy Andrews also set a personal record and won the 200 freestyle race. Nikki Borgerding took second place in both breaststroke events and was part of the Falcons' second-place 200 medley relay team. That group also included Franziska Wohlert, who placed third in three individual swims.
SCOUTING MIAMI
The RedHawks are led by head coach Hollie Bonewit-Cron, who is in her second year at the helm of the RedHawks. Bonewit-Cron came to Miami following svveral years at Nova Southeastern, as well as a stint as the head Olympic coach for Grenada. She has also served as an assistant at the University of Miami and University of Florida, and she was a collegiate swimmer at Ohio University. Iin her debut season in Oxford, she led Miami to a fourth-place finish at the 2017 MAC Championships. This season, Miami has started 0-2 with dual meet losses to Purdue (194-105) and Akron (156-144). Against Akron the RedHawks won seven of 16 events. Redshirt senior Pei Lin swept the diving events with marks of 370.20 (3-meter) and 305.18 (1-meter). Sophomore Emma Bradley won the 1000 freestyle and 500 freestyle races, while junior Ella Moynihan captured the 200 freestyle and Elise Campbell took the 100 freestyle. Fellow senior Holly Schuster also won, taking top honors in the 100 breaststroke race.
COACH SAYS...
"We face a very strong Miami team on the road this week. Miami has a very strong team having competed down to the final event with 4 time defending MAC Champion Akron last weekend. We are looking to see how we respond to our meet from last weekend and from the training we put forth this week in the pool and on the boards. We challenged the girls this week and it will be great to see how they respond on the road against one of the top teams in the MAC when we are tired and on the road. We have a chance to race a few events we have not competed yet this year with the 400 IM and 800 Free Relay.
