BGSU Student-Athletes Graduating At Highest Rate In The MAC
November 08, 2017 | General, Compliance, Falcon Club, Student-Athlete Services
The NCAA released the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) for each Division I athletic program today and Bowling Green remains ahead of the curve nationally and within the Mid-American Conference. BGSU's 92 percent GSR rate was the highest among all MAC schools (Miami was second at 91 percent) and 15 of the 18 varsity intercollegiate athletics teams had a GSR that ranked among the top half of the league in their respective sport (up from 14-of-18 a year ago). Bowling Green is improved three percent over 2016.
Â
Ten of Bowling Green's teams have a perfect 100 percent GSR, up from nine a year ago, seven in 2015, five in 2014 and four in 2013. Another two are at least at 90 percent. Men's basketball, men's cross country, hockey, women's basketball, women's golf, gymnastics, women's soccer, swim/dive, tennis and volleyball all ranked with a perfect graduation success rate, while softball (94 percent) and baseball (90 percent) posted exemplary marks.
Â
"The primary goal for our student-athletes is to earn a BGSU degree that will set them on a path for success in life," BGSU Director of Athletics Bob Moosbrugger said. "With challenging academic and athletic schedules, student-athletes must maintain a great level of discipline and commitment. Congratulations to the student-athletes, coaches, academic advisors and staff for pursuing excellence in every aspect of their collegiate experience as evidenced by these latest NCAA GSR numbers."
Â
The largest one-year increase within the department came in men's basketball for the third straight year. The program improved to 100 percent from 90 percent a year ago, 73 percent in 2015, and 56 percent in 2014. Football climbed eight points to 84 percent, while women's soccer was up five percent to a perfect 100. Women's cross country/track and field improved four percent to 88 percent.
Â
Fourteen of BGSU's 18 teams have a GSR that is equal to or ahead of the national graduation success rate for their sport. Men's basketball is 23 points better than the national 77 percent average, while men's cross country (19 percent), hockey (14 percent), baseball (11 percent), and women's basketball (11 percent) all rank at least 10 percentage points ahead of the national rate.
Â
As evidenced by these statistics, BGSU's student-athletes have taken on the challenge of excelling both on the field and in the classroom. In fact, the two areas complement each other and provide a foundation for success across all areas of a student-athlete's experience.
Â
"Many would not be able to pursue sports at this elite level if it wasn't for the setting that higher education provides," Rachel Durbin, a BGSU graduate cross country and track & field student-athlete who is pursuing her graduate degree, said. "Athletics gives us the confidence to succeed in the classroom and vice versa."
Â
"My dad always told me that football is what you do, but not who you are," Donovan Wilson, a BGSU graduate pursuing his master's degree, said. "I always took that to heart, going as hard as possible both on the field and off the field in the classroom. I've faced adversity in athletics and in school, and those challenges have forced me to grow as a man."
Â
The Graduation Success Rate was developed by the NCAA as part of its academic reform initiative to more accurately measure the success of Division I student-athletes and it takes into account the many different academic paths followed by today's college students. Unlike the federal graduation rate, the GSR holds institutions accountable for transfer students. The GSR also accounts for midyear enrollees and is calculated for every sport.
Â
The GSR data released by the NCAA today is based on the four entering freshmen classes in Division I from 2007-08 through 2010-11 and measures graduation within a six-year time frame.
