AKRON, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University swimming and diving team maintained their hold on third place among nine teams on Saturday (Dec. 2) at the 2017 Zippy Invitational. After completing the second day of events, the Falcons have 907 points and rest 141.5 points behind second-place Buffalo. BGSUÂ stands ahead of Oakland (848.5) and Toledo (749.5) in the standings, while the host Akron Zips lead the meet with 1,427.5 points.
BGSU had another successful day attacking the school record books. A Falcon participant in each of the five individual swimming events posted a time that broke into Bowling Green's all-time top ten lists. One day after breaking the school record in the 200 individual medley, freshman Jordan Andrusak posted a 4:19.84 in the 400 IM for the fourth-best time in school history and a third-place finish in the event. Fellow freshman Sarah Hennings was already in the top ten for the 100 butterfly, but she improved her spot with a 0:55.72 in the preliminary round. She's now seventh on the all-time list, and she placed fifth in the final (55.75).
Freshman Maddy Andrews was the team's best swimmer in the 200 freestyle event and won the consolation final by touching in 1:50.25. That mark was a team-best for the season and moved her into sixth place in school history. Nikki Borgerding earned a bronze finish for the Falcons in the 100 breaststroke. Her time, 1:03.22, was also a team-best for the season and sixth-best on BGSU's all-time list. Finally, senior Maria Galic joined Elodie Schreiber in the championship final of the 100 backstroke. Schreiber is already in the all-time top ten and finished fourth in this race (55.37). Galic took seventh in 0:56.03 and moved into ninth in school history.
The Falcons also earned an event victory when Talisa Lemke won the three-meter diving. Lemke swept the diving events this weekend; it is her fifth sweep of the season. In addition, Falcon athletes established 19 new personal records on Saturday. BGSU will conclude the three-day meet at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday (Dec. 3) with preliminary rounds in four events. The evening session begins at 4:00 p.m. and includes six events.
