LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – The Bowling Green women's golf team closed out the fourth annual Mid-American Match Play Challenge with back-to-back victories in the second and third rounds. In Tuesday's third round of action, the Falcons were able to down Dayton by a 3-1-1 mark to finish the tournament 2-1 on the par 72, 6,068-yard King's Dunes course at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club.
"I am pleased with the strides we made at our first event of the spring and look forward to competing in Arizona next week," Bowling Green women's golf head coach Stephanie Young said. "BGSU is proud to host this event for the teams to begin their spring seasons."
Bowling Green, seeded ninth based on Golfstat rankings, initially fell in the first round to No. 8 Ohio Monday morning, but rebounded with a 3-2 win over No. 10 Central Michigan in the afternoon. The Falcons carried the momentum into Tuesday and ware able to chalk up another victory against No. 11 Dayton with wins by sophomore Sarah Kern, freshman Jessica Madry and senior Fran Rodriguez.
Kern battled back and forth through the first nine holes against Dayton's Alissa Danielson, but came out to lead through the final six consecutive holes for a 3&2 final. Kern also earned a point in the Falcons second round against Central Michigan yesterday afternoon with a 4&2 win at the No. 5 spot.
In the No. 4 spot, Dayton's Makenzie George started out with a lead, but Bowling Green's junior Madelynn Swank was able to cut the deficit heading into the back nine. After earning a win the second round, freshman Madry carried her momentum to Tuesday's competition and followed up with another point for the Falcons when she downed Dayton's Emma Meyer. The Houston, Texas native was all square through the first five holes, and trailed by one through the next four at the end of the front nine. It was in the second half of action that Madry excelled, after tying up the field on hole No. 1. From that point on, Madry broke away with an outright lead to close out her match in a 4&2 final.
Similarly, Rodriguez was all square with her opponent through the first two holes of competition, but was then able to lead through 12 of the 17 holes of play. A native of Flower Mound, Texas, Rodriguez was also able to earn two points for the Falcons at the Mid-American Match Play Challenge after downing her competitor yesterday against Central Michigan by 4&3, following it up with today's 2&1 performance, securing the Falcons 3 points needed for a victory.
At the No. 1 spot, sophomore Erin Fahey held a narrow match with Jenna DiPaolo of Dayton, and was able to close out the tournament all square. Of a full 18 holes of competition, Fahey was able to match DiPaolo on seven holes, and evened the field on two occasions. With wins on hole No. 18 as well as hole No. 7, Fahey was able to reclaim an even field to finish square.
