COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Bowling Green State University baseball team recorded 10 hits, but lost to No. 20 Texas A&M in the 2017 season opener on Friday (Feb. 17) night by a score of 15-1. The game was played in College Station, Texas in front of 7,209 fans, which is an opening day record for Texas A&M's Blue Bell Park.
Four Bowling Green errors across the first four innings allowed Texas A&M to take a 4-0 lead heading into the fifth frame. Tyler Anderson got the start for BGSU, and allowed two earned runs over 3.2 innings of work. He allowed six hits and registered one strikeout.
"We committed too many errors early in the game, and we just didn't cash in on our opportunities throughout the night," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "We had our chances throughout the night to make a game of it, but we didn't execute well in the three phases. I was proud with how we battled offensively, and put guys on base almost every inning. We'll regroup and get ready for tomorrow."
The Aggies scored one run in the fifth, and four more in the sixth, before sophomore Chase Antle turned in an extremely encouraging outing. The hard-throwing righty struck out the side with three swinging strikeouts. Antle's three third strikes were all thrown at least 92 MPH.
Bowling Green's offense put pressure on preseason All-American Brigham Hill all night long. Hill went six scoreless, and struck out 10. In the first, Minorik poked a one-out single into left field, and then Righter was hit by a pitch with two down, but a strikeout ended the threat.
In the second, Nick Glanzman reached base with a bunt single before a ground out to third ended the frame. Bowling Green was set down in order in the third inning for the only time across the first six innings, but the Falcons regrouped and put together one of its best rallies of the game in the fourth inning.
The Falcons put their first two runners on base, as Randy Righter singled, and Derek Drewes reached on a bunt single to the pitcher. However, the next three Falcon batters were set down in succession to get the Aggies out of the jam.
In the fifth, Ty Suntken recorded a single – his first as a Falcon – but was thrown out at second trying to extend it into a double. Jake Wilson then drew a walk, but the Falcons could not score. In the sixth inning, Bowling Green loaded the bases.
Righter began the inning with his second single of the evening. Drewes then moved him over to second with a ground out, before R.J. Williams coaxed a walk and Glanzman bunted for a single for the second time of the ballgame. Cam Daugherty picked up a bat to pinch hit, and worked a full count, prior to striking out with an off speed pitch.
In the eighth, after three more runs for the Aggies in the seventh, Bowling Green loaded the bases again, as the Falcons started the frame with hits from Righter, Justin Mott and Greg Basalyga. This time, the Falcons cashed in, as Glanzman brought home Righter with a ground out to first to get BG on the board. The Aggies concluded the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the frame.
Righter finished the game 3-for-3 with a hit by pitch. He reached base in all four of his plate appearances. Glanzman, who had the lone RBI, went 2-for-4. Riley Minorik, Drewes, Mott, Basalyga and Suntken each had a hit apiece for the Orange and Brown.
Bowling Green will conclude the series tomorrow with a doubleheader. The doubleheader will start at 2 p.m., with the second game beginning approximately 30 minutes after the first game. Originally, the two teams were expected to play on Sunday, but expected inclement weather forced the teams to attempt a doubleheader tomorrow.
