COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Bowling Green State University baseball team concluded its series with No. 20 Texas A&M on Saturday (Feb. 18) with a doubleheader. Texas A&M won the first game, 19-2, and the second game, 16-5. Both games were played at Texas A&M's Blue Bell Park.
The pair of wins for Texas A&M secured the weekend sweep, as the Falcons fell to 0-3 on the young season with the pair of losses Saturday afternoon. The Falcons did double their run totals in each game. After scoring one run in the opener, Bowling Green totaled two runs in the second game, and five runs in the finale.
"I thought we had a legitimate chance to win games here," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "We were able to play from in front today, but we just didn't execute well enough in the three phrases. You can't give a team as potent as Texas A&M extra outs, and unfortunately, we did that throughout the weekend.
"We can take some positives from this weekend, and it was great for our guys to play in this environment, and play innings of baseball outside, which we just haven't been able to do in Bowling Green to this point. We will regroup and get ready for next weekend."
In the first game of the day, Jeff Scott smacked the first home run of his Falcon career. Mitchell Schneider scored BGSU's other run of the game with a sacrifice fly. Cam Daugherty, Logan Giddings, Greg Basalyga and Nick Glanzman notched hits for Bowling Green.
In the second game, after falling behind, 1-0, the Falcons scored three-consecutive runs to take a 3-1 run into the bottom of the fourth inning. Nick Piazza led off the second inning with a walk, and later advanced to third, and scored on a Jake Wilson sacrifice bunt.
In the third, Randy Righter and Drewes singled, prior to a Riley Minorik two-run triple. The lead was short lived, however, as the Aggies scored four runs in the bottom of the frame, and went on to score a total of 15-answered runs, before Drewes poked a two-run single in the eighth to conclude the game's scoring.
Trevor Farrell and Nathan Lohmeier each logged 0.2 innings of scoreless baseball, before Addison Rospert recorded the final out of the ballgame. Â
Bowling Green will head to Nashville next weekend to take part in the Mule Mix Classic. The Falcons will play games against Lipscomb (Feb. 24), Middle Tennessee (Feb. 25), and Belmont (Feb. 26).Â
