DEKALB, Ill. – The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team was defeated 194.875-192.875 by Northern Illinois in the Falcons' first Mid-American Conference dual meet of 2017. The event was held at the Huskies' Convocation Center. Freshman Jovannah East led BGSU's effort by finishing first in a pair of events.
Â
East continues to be a dominant force for the Falcons. Against NIU, her routines on the vault and the balance beam both earned a 9.850 from the judges. None of the other 11 vault competitors could match her score, while she shared the top score on the balance beam with two others. She has now participated in four of BGSU's five meets of 2017 and has competed on vault and beam in each of the four. East has finished first in four of her eight events and has at least a 9.800 in six of the eight.
Â
India McPeak shared the victory on the balance beam with East after securing a 9.850 for herself. The mark was a personal record, and she established another by earning a 9.800 during the floor exercise. She tied with Kayla Rose for fifth place overall with the Falcons' best floor score.
Â
As a team, the Falcons continue to fare well with the beam and vault events. BGSU led the MAC in average team score on both apparatuses entering this weekend and finished the meet at NIU with a 48.675 in both areas. The team's best event in this meet was the floor exercise, as they were handed a 48.725. BGSU scored under 48.000 on the floor in their first two meets but have a 48.750 and now a 48.725 in their last two.
Â
However, Bowling Green's performance on the uneven bars continues to hamper the team's ability to improve its overall score. Rachel Reis (9.750) and Laura Mitchell (9.725) led the team, but the Falcons had to count two falls and could only manage a 46.800, which was 2.2 points lower than NIU's bars score. BGSU eventually lost the meet by two points.
Â
"I am disappointed in our performance this evening. This team has great ability, but their mental toughness and maturity must improve. We have lost athletes on bars to injury. That has been difficult, but at this point in the competition season, there is no excuse for that score. I will push them to rebound quickly, as we prepare for our home meet on Sunday. We are better than this," said BGSU head coach Kerrie Turner.
Â
The Falcons (1-9, 0-1 MAC) host the Western Michigan Broncos (1-5, 0-3 MAC) on Sunday, Feb. 5 at Anderson Arena in Bowling Green, Ohio. The meet will begin at 2:00 p.m., as the Falcons celebrate Military Appreciation Day. In addition, the meet will be televised by BCSN on a tape-delay basis. Fans can watch the meet on Sunday at 7:00 p.m. on BCSN2 or at 11:30 p.m. on BCSN.
