Â
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team soared to a season-best overall score and featured one of the best vaults in school history against Western Michigan University on Sunday at Anderson Arena. BGSU finished the meet with a 194.800, led by an amazing vault from Lauren Feely that resulted in a 9.925.
Â
Â
The Falcons continued their excellence on the vault during the first rotation. India McPeak, Lauren DeMeno and Taylor Worthington began the meet with a series of vaults that earned 9.675 from the judges, and Randi Morris followed with a 9.750 for the third straight meet.
Â
However, the vault lineup saved the best for last. Feely's vault approached perfection, and her 9.925 is tied for the second-best vault score in BGSU history. Jovannah East completed the lineup with an amazing 9.875 score. She has improved her vault result in each of her four meets this season.
Â
BGSU began the weekend with the Mid-American Conference's best team average on vault (48.794), while Feely (9.825) and East (9.808) held the league's top two individual averages. The Falcons ended Sunday with a 48.900 on the apparatus, while Feely and East held the top two individual scores.
Â
Bowling Green moved to the uneven bars for the second rotation. The Falcons have struggled on the bars in 2017 and posted only a 46.800 on Friday at Northern Illinois. On Sunday, the team earned a 48.425, nearly two points better than Friday and the best bars score of 2017 for BGSU. Laura Mitchell placed third overall with a 9.775, while Rachel Reis tied for fifth after scoring 9.750.
Â
As with the vault, BGSU entered the weekend with the MAC's best team average on the balance beam (48.463), and the team improved that mark with a 48.800 during the third rotation. Taylor Worthington captured her first career event championship with a personal-best 9.850, while Mitchell tied for second with a season-best 9.825. Alex Johnston added a personal-best 9.775.
Â
Freshman Jovannah East added to her outstanding inaugural season on the beam with an outstanding routine that earned a 9.800. She has now completed 10 routines for the Falcons, and eight of those have resulted in a 9.800 or better. In addition, her 9.875 on vault is now tied for sixth in school history.
Â
During the final rotation, the Falcons competed with just five gymnasts during the floor exercise. Despite being short one routine, the team finished with a 48.675, which is their second-best floor score of 2017. Kayla Rose took third place with BGSU's best individual floor routine of the season (9.825). Mitchell added a 9.750, while Morris (9.750) and McPeak (9.725) each set new personal records.
Â
Despite the improvement for BGSU, the team's 194.800 could not defeat the Broncos. WMU featured scores of 48.850 or better for each of the four events and finished the meet with a total of 195.575.
Â
Bowling Green (1-10, 0-2 MAC) returns to the mat at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11 when the Falcons host the University of New Hampshire at Anderson Arena. The Falcons will partner with We Are One Team BG at the meet. We Are One Team promotes social justice through sport at BGSU. The team will also be honoring the LGBTQ and international student communities on that date.
