Falcons Begin Conference Play This Weekend

Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University tennis team will begin conference play this weekend. The Falcons travel to Ypsilanti, Mich. Friday to face Eastern Michigan at the Wasik Tennis Complex. They will then return home take on the Toledo Rockets in the Battle of I-75 Sunday at the Perrysburg Tennis Center. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
"We've come a long way this season and made incredible improvements as a team," head coach Stephanie Dalamacio said. "It's time to put the pieces together and have the best MAC season yet."
The Orange and Brown finished the non-conference portion of their season with an overall record of 4-8. The Falcons went undefeated at home, taking down IUPUI, Detroit and Cleveland State. The lone road win was earned against Dayton.
The Falcons captured 24 singles victories in first part of the season. Sophomore Paula Comella leads the Falcons with seven No. 1 singles victories. Sophomore Polina Radeva and freshman Ayumi Sasaki trail Comella with six wins a piece.
In doubles, BG has a total of 11 wins in non-conference play. The duo of Comella and Tavpash lead the Orange and Brown with seven victories at No. 1 for the Orange and Brown. The pair of Radeva and Sasaki have four wins at the No. 2 spot.
Eastern Michigan will play their first conference match against the Falcons Friday. The Eagles enter the weekend with an overall record of 5-9. Head coach Ryan Ray returns seven to his roster with six juniors and one sophomore. Eastern Michigan was voted to finish ninth in the conference this spring by the MAC's head coaches. EMU leads the Falcons, 32-14, in the all-time series between the teams. The Eagles finished the 2016 season with a 5-16 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
Toledo enters the weekend with an overall record of 8-5. The Rockets will face Akron Friday afternoon before taking on the Falcons Sunday. Last season, head coach Tracy Mauntler's team finished with records of 9-13 overall and 3-5 in the MAC. The Rockets fell 4-2 to Western Michigan in the first round of the MAC Championships. The returners for UT are juniors Sidnay Huck, Megan Miller and Colleen O'Brien and sophomores Claire Aleck and Rani Goodland. Toledo was predicted to finish eighth in the MAC, according to the preseason poll. The Falcons lead the Rockets, 26-19, in the all-time series between the teams.
