Raleigh, N.C. – Kaila Butler posted the second-best freshman hammer throw performance in BGSU Outdoor Track & Field history Saturday, placing third with a distance of 187-feet-4 on the final day of the Raleigh Relays Saturday.
In her outdoor track and field debut, Butler threw at least 180 feet in all six of her attempts, moving into fifth place in program history for all throwers. Only Jessie Rowland, a freshman in 2011, threw further in their introductory collegiate season among BGSU hammer throwers.
Butler's mark earned her a Mid-American Conference automatic qualifying mark, one of three for the Falcons on the weekend. Only Laura Igaune, the Latvian hammer throw record holder and a non-collegian, and Towson junior Ksenia Safonova threw further the Butler. Among the 36-person field, Butler defeated throwers from schools such as Duke, Michigan State, North Carolina, Cincinnati, Wake Forest and MAC rival Ohio.
On top of the effort in the hammer throw, Bowling Green's 800 relay team also posted a stellar time of 1:37.88 to finish fourth overall. In fact, the quartet of Dorresha Green, Taylor Rambo, Mis'cha Sellers and Cortisha Short posted the second-fastest 800 relay time in school history.
The Falcons earned two other top 10 performances at the Raleigh Relays, one of the largest competitions in the country this weekend. Cortisha Short was eighth in the 200 with a time of 24.84 seconds and Kayla Velasquez finished 10th in the hammer throw at 171-4.
Bowling Green will have a week off before the team's annual Toledo Dual meet. The event will take place at Toledo April 7.
