Toledo, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University outdoor track and field team's four-year win streak over rival Toledo came to an end in dramatic fashion as the Rockets won by the slimmest of margins, 100-99 Friday evening. Despite the defeat, Bowling Green earned five Mid-American Conference automatic qualifying marks and won 10-of-19 events overall.
The meet turned on pole vault, where the Falcons did not have an entrant. Toledo outscored the Falcons 8-0 in that event, giving the Rockets just enough of a cushion to get the victory. Bowling Green dominated the throws and the short sprints, but Toledo made up for the disparity with a strong showing in the distance events and the jumps.
"There were a lot of positives today, but we still didn't do what we came here to do and that makes it bittersweet," BGSU Track & Field Coach Lou Snelling said. "Sometimes, it's good to have that experience early in the season. It's great motivation for the MAC Championships in May."
With the five MAC automatic qualifying marks Friday, the Falcons now have eight for the year. In 2016, Bowling Green had just 10 for the entire season. It highlights the difference between a dual meet and a league championship event.
"A dual meet is about depth and covering all your events," Snelling said. "At the MAC Championships, it's about the cream of the crop with only the top eight in each event scoring. These weren't perfect conditions today. So to see the kinds of individual performances happen today, we are happy with that."
Bowling Green earned two MAC auto marks in the first three events of the day, starting with the hammer throw. Kaila Butler, who already reach a MAC auto mark two weeks ago, continued to impress, posting the top freshman performance in program history (and moving up to third in school history regardless of class) with a personal best throw of 189-feet-8.25. But Kayla Velasquez also earned a bid to the MAC Championships by throwing 181-5 and finishing second. Elizabeth Iversen ended third with a PR throw of 175-3.75.
It didn't take long for Iversen to get her own MAC auto mark as she turned around just minutes later and won the discus at 156-5. That also moved her into 10th place in school history in the event. Aliyah Gustafson was second with a personal best toss of 154-0.
Bowling Green's next MAC auto bid came on the track as Taylor Rambo ran the 400 in 55.34 seconds to win the event. She was just shy of her personal best time of 55.23 seconds, which she set at the MAC Championships a year ago.
Junior transfer BeJai Fray posted the team's fourth automatic bid, this time in the long jump. She flew 19-5.5 to win the event. The team's final MAC auto mark came in the shot put, where defending MAC Champion Aliyah Gustafson won with a throw of 49-8.25. Makenzie Wheat was second and Iversen finished third for the Falcons.
BGSU picked up a number of event victories as well. Dorresha Green won the 100 in 12.05 seconds, just .01 seconds off her PR, and Cortisha Short did the same in the 200 in 25.06 seconds. Chasatea Brown finished first in the 100 hurdles in 16.24 seconds and the 400 relay team of Green, Short, Kyla Paster and Brown ran 46.62 seconds to become the eighth-fastest relay team in school history. Rambo, Brianna Tidmore, Mis'cha Sellers and Rachel Stute won the final event of the night, the 1600 relay.
Other strong results came in the 800, where Rachel Durbin set a new PR with a time of 2:19.85 to place second. Brown finished second in the 400 hurdles with a personal best time of 1:04.16 and Fray moved into ninth in school history in the javelin with a second-place finish at 107-10.25.
Bowling Green will be back in action as the team will compete at the All-Ohio Championships, hosted by Cincinnati, April 14-15. Some individuals will compete at the Mt. SAC Relays April 13-14.
