MAC AUTO BIDS
During the opening weekend of competition, BGSU earned three Mid-American Conference automatic qualifying bids. Rachel Walny earned a spot in the 5000 field, while Makenzie Wheat and Kaila Butler did the same in the shot put and hammer throw, respectively. A year ago, the Falcons carried 10 MAC auto qualifying marks into the league championship meet. Among those who earned an auto bid a year ago, Raven Porter (high jump), Aliyah Gustafson (shot put) and Kayla Velasquez (hammer throw) remain in competition this year.
Â
THE BUTLER DID IT
Freshman Kaila Butler debuted in the hammer throw at the Raleigh Relays with one of the top performances in program history. She threw 187-feet-4 to earn a MAC automatic qualifying bid and currently ranks second in the MAC. In fact, it moved her to fifth in program history in the event and second among BGSU freshmen all-time.
IN THEIR OWN WORDS
"We talked about just competing. Just beat the person in blue and yellow and that's all we're worried about. Historically, the weather hasn't been great and it doesn't look like that's going to change this year. We don't have a lot of weekends after this, so it would be nice to use this weekend as a springboard for the rest of the season." – Lou Snelling, Head Coach
Â
BUILDING MOMENTUM
BGSU completed the indoor track and field season in late February by placing fourth at the MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. The finish was the team's best result since 1999. That came on the heels of the squad's third place finish at the MAC Cross Country Championships in the fall. A year ago, Bowling Green placed sixth at the MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships and will look to use the momentum from the fall and winter to improve upon that result.
