MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team concluded its three-game series at Morehead State on Sunday (March 5). The Falcons, after winning the first game of the series on Saturday, were swept in today's doubleheader by the Eagles. BGSU lost the first game, 11-7, and the second game, 9-6.
Bowling Green falls to 1-8 on the 2017 season with the pair of losses, while Morehead State improves to 7-5 following the doubleheader sweep.
"We put ourselves in a great situation by winning yesterday, but you can't hang your hat on the first game of a series," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "I continue to see things that I like out of our team. Our offense is much farther along at this point than it was last season. We also have gotten some incredible pitching performances, and we are starting to play better defense. However, I always talk about the three phrases, and until we put everything together consistently, we won't be happy with where we are."
In the first game, the Orange and Brown scored three runs in the first inning, but Morehead State would go on to score nine unanswered runs to run away with the victory. The Falcons did counter with a four-run sixth, but the Eagles plated two more runs in the bottom of the inning to keep their distance.
Blake Jenkins continued his sophomore surge with a 3-for-4 performance. He scored a run and registered two RBI. Derek Drewes went 2-for-5 with an RBI and run, while Jake Wilson and Riley Minorik recorded a hit and RBI apiece. Nick Glanzman drove in Bowling Green's other run.
The Falcons' offense pounded out 12 hits, and Bowling Green committed just one error. Chase Antle threw 3.0 scoreless innings to conclude the contest. He struck out five, walked one, and allowed four hits.
In the second game, the Orange and Brown would get off to another hot start, as BGSU scored two runs apiece across the first two innings of the ballgame. Greg Basalyga hit a two-run home run in the first, and had a career day at the plate. The senior went 3-for-5 with five RBI and one run.
Three other Falcons recorded multiple hits for an offense that posted a total of 13 hits. Cam Daugherty, who hit a home run yesterday, went 3-for-4 with a run. Jenkins went 2-for-5 with an RBI, and Justin Mott went 2-for-3 with a run. Freshman Nathan Lohmeier logged 3.0 innings in the loss, and struck out three batters. He allowed just one run.
Bowling Green will shift its focus to play at the Perfect Game Spring Swing in Emerson, Georgia next week. The Falcons will begin the event on Tuesday (March 7) with a game against Jacksonville State. Bowling Green will then travel to Oxford, Alabama to face Jacksonville State on March 8.Â
