OXFORD, Ala. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team was held to two hits in a 5-0 loss to Jacksonville State University on Wednesday (March 8) night. The game was played at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama, which is Jacksonville State's temporary home for the 2017, as its stadium on campus is undergoing renovations this season.
"I know I sound like a broken record, but we again were not able to execute in the three phrases," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "It has been one thing, or another this season. We have to figure it out, and be able to play at a high level offensively, defensively, and on the mound. We have a big week ahead of us, and we need to refocus and be ready to go for Friday's doubleheader."
Jacksonville State improves to 7-4 on the season with the victory, while Bowling Green drops to 1-9 with the loss. The Falcons were supposed to play the Gamecocks on Tuesday in Emerson, Georgia, but the game was cancelled due to inclement weather.
The Gamecocks took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Chandler Stillings walked the first three batters of the contest, and Jacksonville State went on to cash in with a two-run double. However, Stillings settled in extremely well.
The freshman southpaw gave the Falcons 3.0 innings, and retired the final seven batters that he faced, as he notched perfect innings in the second and third. He finished the game allowing two earned runs on one hit. He walked four, and struck out one.
The Gamecocks scored three more runs in the sixth inning off freshman Damon Egnor, who blanked Jacksonville State in the fourth and fifth innings prior to the three-run sixth. Kody Brown stabilized things, and gave Bowling Green 2.0 shutout innings.
Tony Landi tossed a scoreless eighth, but the Falcon offense was never able to get it going. Greg Basalyga and Nick Glanzman registered Bowling Green's two hits. Basalyga also coaxed a walk, as did Derek Drewes.
After a day off tomorrow, the Falcons will play a doubleheader on Friday (March 10) in Emerson, Georgia. Bowling Green will take on Georgia State at 4 p.m., before battling with Army at 7 p.m. BGSU will conclude the week by playing Army on March 11, and Georgia State on March 12.
