Columbus, Ohio – Junior Elizabeth Iversen won the shot put and the discus at the Jesse Owens Classic as the Bowling Green State University outdoor track and field team concluded the weekend at Ohio State University.
Iversen captured the team's 10th Mid-American Conference automatic qualifying bid of the 2017 season, doing so with a throw of 48-feet-8 (14.84m) to win the open shot put flight. That total equaled the program's 10 MAC auto bids from the 2016 season. Iversen also won the open discus throw flight, finished with a mark of 153-2.5 (46.70m). She had already earned a MAC auto bid in that event, throwing as far as 156-5 in the dual meet against Toledo.
Iversen's effort highlighted a strong day for Bowling Green, which included five top-five finishes and another five in the top 10.
One of the top performances of the day came from redshirt junior Aliyah Gustafson in the championship flight of the shot put. The defending MAC champion in the event threw a season-best 51-1.25 (15.58m) to move into third-place in the MAC this year and finish fifth at the Jesse Owens Classic.
Junior Dorresha Green posted two strong times in the 100 and 200, though both were wind-aided. Her time of 11.90 seconds in the 100 and 24.57 seconds in the 200 would have been personal bests. Cortisha Short ran a strong time of 11.99 seconds in the 100 with wind that was allowable for MAC and NCAA qualification standards. It ties Green's wind-legal 11.99 earlier this year for the fastest on the team this season.
Bowling Green's 400 relay team of Green, Short, Kyla Paster and Chasatea Brown placed fourth in 46.73 seconds, less than .5 seconds slower than the team's season-best time of 46.28 seconds at the All-Ohio Championships.
Redshirt senior Taylor Rambo finished sixth in the 400 with a time of 55.72 seconds. That time was also less than .5 seconds slower than her personal best of 55.23.
Aliyah Gustafson added a fifth-place finish in the discus at 144-6 (44.05m), while Kyla Paster was eighth in the triple jump (37-7.5 / 11.47m) and Makenzie Wheat eighth in the championship flight of the shot put (47-11 / 14.61m).
Bowling Green is set to send its team to two separate meets next weekend. The Falcons are scheduled to compete at the prestigious Drake Relays and the Gina Relays, hosted by Hillsdale College, April 27-29.
