Kalamazoo, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University track and field team posted a team score that hadn't been surpassed by the program in 18 years as the Falcons concluded the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships Saturday, hosted by Western Michigan University. The Falcons scored 60 points and finished seventh overall.
Â
The program has not scored more than 60 points at a MAC Championship meet since the team recorded 94 in 1999 and that total was eight more than the squad's 52 from a year ago. The 2014 team also scored 60.
Â
"I feel good about the fact that we've gotten to this level," BGSU Track and Field Coach Lou Snelling said. "I'm really proud of the girls; they had a lot of really good individual accomplishments. If we want to be greedy, we probably came up just a hair short, but it was a very good weekend and there was a lot to be proud of."
Â
Bowling Green was attempting to finish in the top half of the league's 12-team standings following a third place finish in women's cross country in the fall and a sixth place finish at the MAC Indoor Track & Field Championships. It would have been the first time all three teams had finished in the top half of the league standings since 1999. But rival Toledo overcame a four-point deficit on the final two events to score 63 and edge out the Falcons.
Â
Akron won the MAC Championship with 128 points, narrowly defeating Eastern Michigan with 124 and Kent State with 118.5. Northern Illinois was fourth with 84.5 and Miami was fifth with 74. Following the Falcons, host Western Michigan scored 53, Buffalo 48, Central Michigan 26, Ball State 25 and Ohio 14.
Â
On the final day of the three-day meet, the Falcons earned six trips to the podium. Redshirt sophomore Rachel Walny, who was the MAC runner-up in the 10,000 Thursday evening, placed fourth in the 5,000 for the top individual result of the day.
Â
"Between the 5,000 and 10,000, she ran a lot of laps," Snelling said. "It was a very gutsy performance and a big step forward from last year in a lot of ways. Whatever conference you are talking about, the time she ran in the 10,000 is going to place really well. It would have been a meet record here had she won."
Â
Senior Taylor Rambo concluded a strong career by placing fifth in the 400 in 54.96 seconds, one day after qualifying for the finals with a personal best time of 54.70 seconds in the event.
Â
BGSU's 400 relay team also earned a fifth-place finish as Dorresha Green, Cortisha Short, Kyla Paster and Chasatea Brown ran the fourth-fastest time in school history at 46.19 seconds. For Short, that race precluded a seventh-place finish in the 200 later in the day in 24.48 seconds. Short entered the weekend as the No. 17 seed, qualified for finals in eighth with a PR 24.40 time Friday and raced to a seventh-place finish.
Â
The Falcons also had two student-athletes earn podium spots in the discus. Aliyah Gustafson finished seventh with a throw of 153-feet-11 and Kayla Velasquez was eighth at 146-7.75. In total, BGSU had eight podium trips across the three throws events on the weekend – led by Velasquez's runner-up finish in the hammer throw Thursday.
Â
Bowling Green will await bids to the NCAA Division I East Region Preliminary Round, hosted by Kentucky, May 25-27. The Falcons anticipate multiple qualifiers for the postseason.
