LEXINGTON, Ky. – For the 17th consecutive season, the Bowling Green State University volleyball program has been recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for academic excellence with the AVCA Team Academic Award.
The BGSU volleyball team earned a 3.48 GPA for the 2016-17 season, where 14 student-athletes earned a 3.0 grade point average or higher over the fall semester, while 12 student-athletes posted a 3.0 grade point average or higher in the spring semester. Eight Falcons recorded a perfect 4.0 grade point average in the fall semester, while five student-athletes tallied a perfect 4.0 GPA in the spring semester.
A record of 822 college and high school teams were recognized by the AVCA in 2016-17, shattering the previous year's total of 762 and sets a new all-time high for this award, including a total of 145 NCAA Division I Women's programs. The AVCA recognizes volleyball programs across the country that maintain a team GPA of 3.30 and higher on a 4.0 scale.
Bowling Green is in elite company in terms of the longest active streaks among all NCAA Division I volleyball programs. Only a total of three programs have met the 15-year streak, in which only Indiana State University has been honored annually for a longer period than the Falcons, having received the award for 19 consecutive seasons. Mid-American Conference foe University of Toledo reached the 15-year mark with this season's honor. The AVCA instituted the award for the 1992-93 season.
