BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green tennis program returns to action this Saturday, Jan. 27 as it hosts Youngstown State in a 1 p.m. first serve. The event is free to attend for all fans at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
The Falcons will be looking to extend its undefeated 2-0 start of the season as it hosts the Penguins. After its 6-1 victory in the season opener against Chicago State, the Falcons earned a dramatic 4-3 win over Xavier this past Sunday. With their performances in the matches earning a pair of victories, Ayumi Sasaki and Polina Radeva were also awarded MAC Women's Tennis Doubles Team of the Week for the first time in their careers.
Against Chicago State, the Falcons swept the doubles competition, while Paula Comella, Radeva, Sasaki, Marharita-Sophia Tavpash and Theresa Wassmann all picked up wins against their opponents. Against Xavier, two of three Falcon pairings were able to claim victories for the doubles point, while Comella, Radeva and Sasaki all continued their undefeated streaks in singles action.
Youngstown State has had a slow start to the spring campaign as they hold a 0-2 record after 1-6 and 2-5 losses to Pittsburgh and Duquesne, respectively. The Penguins will be facing off at Eastern Michigan on Friday, Jan. 26 prior to taking on the Falcons as well.
An eight-player roster, seniors Sofia Macias, Noelly Longi Nsimba, and Ana Stroe lead a Youngstown State team featuring two sophomores and three freshmen, while head coach Mickael Sopel begins his fifth season with the Penguins program.
Standing out for the Penguins is senior Nsimba, as she defeated her singles opponent at Pittsburgh 6-2, 6-3 for Youngstown State's lone point on the day, while at Duquesne, she paired up with freshman Anastasiia Khokhlova for the only Penguins doubles victory on the day. In singles competition, sophomore Imann Hassim and Khokhlova were able to down their Duquesne opponents for the two points in a 5-2 final.
In hosting Youngstown State, it is the third of eight home matches slated for the Falcons in the 2018 campaign.
