• The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team, looking to extend a four-match unbeaten streak, returns home for a key Mid-American Conference contest this weekend. Head coach Eric Nichols and the Falcons face Western Michigan University on Saturday evening (Oct. 20). Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at Cochrane Stadium, and admission is free.
• Then, the Brown and Orange will wrap up the non-conference portion of the schedule with a Tuesday (Oct. 23) trip to the Queen City. BGSU will meet the University of Cincinnati in a 7:00 p.m. start at Gettler Stadiium.
CHARLIE IS GOLDEN
• In each of the last two matches, junior Charlie Maciejewski has scored in overtime to give the Falcons a road win. Maciejewski, a native of Cincinnati, scored a Golden Goal at IUPUI last Tuesday (Oct. 9), then recorded another OT winner on Saturday (Oct. 13) at Northern Illinois.
• At IUPUI, Maciejewski scored the winner with just 3.5 seconds left in the first scheduled OT period. He took a pass from freshman Jensen Lukacsko, made a spin move to get around his defender, took the ball into the box from the right side and blasted a shot into the roof of the net from approximately 10 yards out.
• In the Northern Illinois match, Achille Robin's long free kick was redirected into the box by senior Tate Robertson. Robertson got a touch on the ball near the 18-yard line, flicking it on a diagonal path toward the center of the box. Maciejewski raced into the area, leaned down and headed the ball past the NIU 'keeper to give the Falcons the win.
• Maciejewski now has three career goals. All three have come on the road. One came with under two minutes left in regulation and tied the match, and the other two (last week's two goals) both came in OT. And, two of the three goals have come with the Falcons playing at least one man down.
• For his efforts, Maciejewski was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week on Monday (Oct. 15), and earned MAC Player-of-the-Week honors the next day.
TWO (MORE) FOR TATE
• Senior Tate Robertson had the primary assist on both of BGSU's goals in the win at Northern Illinois on Saturday night. For Robertson, the two-assist game was his third of the season. He also had two helpers against both Northern Kentucky and Western Illinois.
• Robertson has team-leading totals of eight assists and 14 points on the year.
• He has been directly involved in the scoring of 11 of BGSU's 15 goals this fall, including seven of the Falcons' last eight goals.
• In his BGSU career, Robertson now has totals of 19 assists and 33 points. He leads all active Falcons in both categories.
A FEW THINGS YOU MIGHT WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE FALCONS
• BGSU enters the WMU match with a record of 4-5-3 on the season, and the Falcons are 1-0-1 in MAC play. BG is tied for second place in the six-team conference entering this weekend's action.
• The Falcons, as mentioned, posted a pair of OT victories on the road last week, with a 3-2 win at IUPUI (Oct. 9) and a 2-1 victory over Northern Illinois (Oct. 13).
• Saturday's win came over a Northern Illinois team that was 20th in the nation in the RPI rankings heading into that match. BG's last road win over a team ranked in the top-20 in the RPI came two years ago, at West Virginia (17th).
• BG's current unbeaten streak also includes a 2-1 win over Valparaiso (Sept. 29) and a scoreless draw vs. Akron in the MAC opener (Oct. 6).
• The Falcons are 1-2-2 at home and 3-3-1 on the road. BGSU has scored 15 goals and allowed 19 this season to date.
• The Falcons have scored two or more goals in four of the last five contests, including the wins over Valpo, IUPUI and NIU, along with a 3-2 overtime loss at Purdue Fort Wayne (a team ranked eighth in the country in RPI at that time).
• BG began the season with a pair of one-goal losses to Northern Kentucky (3-2)and Penn State (1-0), and BG then battled Wright State to a scoreless draw on August 31 before picking up a 3-2 win at Western Illinois two days later.
• The Wright State result has looked more and more impressive with each passing day, as the Raiders are now 10-1-2 on the season, with the only loss coming on the road against No. 6 Virginia. WSU is ranked No. 17 in this week's United Soccer Coaches poll and 18th in the Top Drawer Soccer poll. The Raiders, shut out by the BG defense, are averaging 2.83 goals per match in the other 12 contests.
• No. 3 Michigan State broke open a close match with two goals in the last 10 minutes to down the Falcons, 3-0, at Cochrane (Sept. 7). Then, BG battled Ohio State to a 1-1, double-OT draw in Columbus (Sept. 11). The Falcons outshot the Buckeyes, 16-5, after halftime, and BG tied the match on sophomore Zach Buescher's goal with just nine seconds to go.
• The Falcons' match at Wofford, scheduled for Sept. 15, was cancelled due to Hurricane Florence and the weather forecast in the Carolinas. BG then lost at Cleveland State (Sept. 18) before falling at PFW on an overtime penalty kick.
• Senior Tate Robertson leads the Falcons with 14 points, and has been involved in the scoring of 11 of BGSU's 15 goals this fall. Robertson has three goals to tie for the team lead, and he paces the Falcons with eight assists, including the primary assist on seven of the Falcons' goals.
• Senior Ebenezer Ackon and sophomore Chris Sullivan have six points apiece on the year. Ackon has three goals to tie Robertson for second on the team in that category. Ackon had two goals just 75 seconds apart in the NKU match, and scored the first goal of the NIU contest.
• Sullivan has two goals and two assists on the year, while fellow soph Vinny Worner has five points, on a goal and three helpers. Junior Charlie Maciejewski also has five points this season, including an overtime goal in each of BGSU's last two games.
• Maciejewski is the first Falcon with two Golden Goals in a season since 2014, when Max Auden and Jacob Roth each had a pair of OT winners. That '14 team won no fewer than five matches in overtime en route to the championship match of the MAC Tournament.
• Senior Peter Pugliese also has four points, all coming on assists. He ranks second on the Falcons in the assists department. Three Falcons – Buescher, junior Chris Brennan and freshman Jensen Lukacsko – have three points apiece.
• Junior Anthony Mwembia has played all 12 matches in goal, and has 38 total saves, two shutouts and a goals-against average of 1.48.
• In BG's 12 matches, the Falcons have been shut out five times, scored one goal on one occasion, and scored two or more goals six times.
• Five different Falcons have started all 12 games this fall. That list includes Buescher, Mwembia, Peter Pugliese, Robertson and Sullivan. A total of 13 different players have started at least six matches to date.
• Mwembia has been on the pitch for every second of every match so far, while Buescher has played 1146 of the 1158-plus minutes. Sullivan (1111) and Robertson (1089) each have played at least 1080 minutes this fall as well, with senior Moe Mustafa (1078) and Worner (1027) close behind.
TWO GOALS (USUALLY) DOES THE TRICK
• Prior to this season, the Falcons had a record of 50-4-6 when scoring two goals in a match in the Eric Nichols Era. BGSU has lost twice this year when doing so, however, but the Falcons are now 4-2-0 in such matches this season to date. BG is now 54-6-6 when scoring two or more goals in the Nichols Era.
THE OPPONENTS
• Western Michigan enters the BGSU match with an overall record of 8-5-2, and the Broncos are 0-1-1 in the MAC. Western's conference matchups to date have been a 2-1 home loss to West Virginia and a 1-1 draw at SIUE. Most recently, the Broncos picked up a 2-1 OT win over visiting Xavier on Tuesday afternoon. WMU is 6-2-1 at home and 2-3-1 on the road this year. The Broncos have a balanced attack, as no player has more than nine points, but six players have at least six. Lukas Von Lienen has started 11 of the team's 15 games in goal, and has 33 saves and a GAA of 0.98. Last year, coach Chad Wiseman's team went 17-4-1 overall and a perfect 5-0-0 in the MAC, and WMU advanced to the NCAA Tournament's Round of 16.
• Cincinnati is 3-10-1 after Tuesday night's 1-0 loss at Purdue Fort Wayne, and the Bearcats are 1-3-0 in the American Athletic Conference, heading into a Saturday matchup at SMU. The 'Cats are 2-5-1 in home matches and 1-5-0 on the road this season to date. Rex Epps leads the team with three goals and seven points, while Noah Lawrence has started nine matches in goal and has 20 saves and a 1.19 GAA. THE SERIES
• BGSU leads Western Michigan, 28-17-4, in the all-time series between the teams, but the Broncos picked up a 1-0 win in Kalamazoo last season. The teams battled to a 1-1 draw two years ago, in the last meeting at Cochrane. BG is 16-4-3 at home, 11-12-1 on the road and 1-1-0 in neutral-site meetings with the Broncos through the years.
• BG leads Cincinnati, 6-5-1, in that series. But, the Bearcats have captured meetings in each of the last two years, including a 3-1 win at Cochrane last year and a 1-0 verdict in Cincinnati in 2016. The Falcons won the first six series meetings from 1972-2001, and the teams tied in 2003. Since then, the Bearcats have won each of the last five matchups.
