UP NEXT FOR THE FALCONS...Â
The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team will play a home game for the first time in nearly a month. Head coach Robyn Fralick and the Falcons will face the University of Detroit Mercy on Monday evening (Dec. 17), with tipoff set for 7:00 p.m. at the Stroh Center.
Then, the Brown and Orange will travel to Northwest Indiana for one final game before the Christmas holiday. BGSU will face Valparaiso University in a Friday-evening matchup (Dec. 21).
Â
CLAP IT UP FOR A ROAD WIN
The Falcons are coming off of a 74-53 win at Canisius (Dec. 8), a win in which BG led by 36 points late in the third quarter before the Griffs mounted a late rally.
The 21-point win was BG's largest road victory in nearly six years, since the Falcons downed Ohio, 67-41, in Athens on Jan. 20, 2013. BGSU posted two road wins by more than 20 points during that 2012-13 campaign, as the Falcons picked up a 60-37 win at Northwestern almost exactly six years prior to the Canisius game. BG won in Evanston on Dec. 9, 2012.
Â
LAMBERT'S LEAVING A LEGACY...
One anagram for "Sydney Lambert" is "merely stand by", but that phrase could not be less accurate when describing the senior guard. Lambert has been an important part of the Falcons' lineup since the day she arrived on campus, and is adding her name to numerous BGSU career charts.
LAMBERT'S LEGACY II: START ME UP
Lambert has started every game since coming to BG, and has made 97 career starts entering the UDM game. If she is in the lineup on Monday, she would move past Angie Bonner (97 starts from 1986-90) into sole possession of 14th on the school career list.
BG has at least 22 games left on the 2018-19 schedule, meaning Lambert has a chance to finish her career as high as fifth in school history in games started. BGSU Hall-of-Famers Kate Achter (124 from 2004-08) and Jackie Motycka (115 from 1985-89) rank fourth and fifth, respectively, on the BG list for career starts.
Â
LAMBERT'S LEGACY III: THOUSAND POINTS OF LIGHT
Lambert enters the Detroit game with a career total of 954 points. She has averaged between 9.4 and 10.4 points per game in every season at BG, and is averaging 9.8 ppg in her career.Â
She currently ranks 29th in school history in points scored, and is 46 points away from becoming the 28th BGSU player to earch the 1,000-point mark for her career.
LAMBERT'S LEGACY IV: SYD-THREE LAMBERT
Lambert's first successful three-point field goal in the win at Canisius was the 200th of her BGSU career. Lambert, who now has 201 triples as a Falcon, is just the fourth Falcon to make 200 career three-pointers. Lambert is averaging just over two treys per game in her career, and if she keeps up that pace, she will move past Liz Honegger (216 three-pointers from 2003-07) and Tracy Pontius (235 from 2007-11) to finish her career in second place.
EYASSES (IT'S THE PLURAL OF EYAS) (LOOK IT UP)
A total of seven players have seen action in all eight games this season to date. That group includes one senior, one junior, two sophomores (including one redshirt soph) and three freshmen.
Four additional Falcons have seen action in at least five of the eight games. That trio consists of one junior, two sophomores and the remaining freshman.
In BG's last seven games, the starting lineup has included two freshmen and a sophomore. All five of BGSU's players who saw action off the bench in the Mercer game were either freshmen or sophomores. At Xavier, all but 21 seconds of time off the bench went to either frosh or sophs.
THE LONG RUN
BGSU went on a lengthy scoring run to seize control of the Canisius game. With the Falcons and Griffs tied at 8-8, BG proceeded to score the game's next 22 points. The Falcons reeled off the final 19 points of the first quarter, then hit a three-pointer to begin the second period.
The school record for consecutive points is believed to be 28. On Dec. 22, 2002, BGSU scored the first 28 points of the game, holding Savannah State off of the scoreboard for the first 9:43 of the contest, en route to an 89-39 win. That game was part of the Bearcat Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio.
MORGAN McMAKIN'
Freshman Morgan McMillen is off to a tremendous start to her collegiate career, to say the least. McMillen was held to two points in the Xavier game, but bounced back with a 14-point game in the win at Canisius. She leads the Falcons with an average of 17.5 points per contest. McMillen has made at least three three-point field goals six times in her first eight games, including a school record-tying eight treys vs. Marshall, in just her second collegiate game.
McMillen became the first BGSU player to score in double digits in each of the first six games of the season in eight years. That feat was achieved only six other times over the last 25 years. In that quarter century, McMillen is the only BG freshman to hit double figures in each of the first six games.
KADIE KAN DO
Freshman Kadie Hempfling is one of the most well-rounded players on the Falcons. Hempfling is averaging 6.5 points per game, good for fifth on the team, despite having attempted just over five shots per contest.
The Ottawa, Ohio, native leads BG in rebounding with 9.0 boards per game. She has led the Falcons in that category six times in her eight career games, and has had at least seven rebounds six times. Hempfling is averaging 13.0 rebounds per game in BG's four wins.
And, for good measure, Hempfling is one of the top passers on the team. She ranks second in assists, with 3.6 helpers per game, and has had six or more assists on three occasions. For comparison's sake, no BG player had more than five assists in a game during all of last season.
PERRY'S PROLIFIC IN THE POST
Sophomore Angela Perry has been making her presence felt in the post for the Falcons this season. She scored a team-high 19 points off the bench at Xavier, and tied her career rebounding high with seven. Perry added 11 points vs. Canisius.
Perry, who missed the non-conference portion of her freshman season due to injury, had a season-high total of nine points on two occasions last year, but she nearly tripled that total in her first 2018-19 game, with 25 points vs. Marshall.
In fact, the Xavier game marked the third time in six contests that Perry scored at least 19 points. The Rochester, Ill., native is averaging 14.6 points per game this season, good for second on the Falcons, and she is shooting 64.1 percent from the field to date.
Perry, after scoring 75 points in 18 games last winter, has 102 points in just seven games this year.
LAST TIME OUT: EPIC RUN PROPELS FALCONS TO WIN AT CANISIUS
The BGSU women's basketball team scored 22-straight points to break last Saturday's (Dec. 8) game wide open, and the Falcons went on to post a 74-53 victory over Canisius at the Koessler Athletic Center.
The Falcons, now 4-4 on the season, seized control of the game by scoring the last 19 points of the first quarter. BG hit a three-point field goal, one of 13 successful triples on the day, to begin the second period and cap the 22-point run.
After Canisius got a layup to stop that run, BGSU proceeded to score the next eight points to take a 38-10 lead. BG led by as many as 36 points late in the third quarter, and the Falcons still led by 30, 66-36, at the day's final media timeout before a late rally got the Griffs got within the final 21-point margin.
Junior Andrea Cecil had 19 points to pace three double-digit scorers, while freshman Morgan McMillen added 14 points and sophomore Angela Perry 11. Freshman Kadie Hempfling had seven points, 10 rebounds, six assists and three steals, while senior Sydney Lambert had six points and six assists.
In the win over the Golden Griffins, Lambert became just the fourth player in school history to make 200 three-point field goals in her career.
One of those triples came during a barrage in which the Falcons connected four times from beyond the arc in a span of under 90 seconds. After missing the first six three-point tries of the day, the Falcons hit five consecutive long-range shots late in the first quarter.
THE FALCONS: A QUICK OVERVIEW
BGSU enters the UDM game with a record of 4-4 on the young season, and the Falcons are coming off a 74-53 win at Canisius. After winning three-straight games at the Stroh Center, the Falcons dropped a pair of contests in Conway, S.C., over the Thanksgiving holiday, then fell at Xavier to end the November slate.
BG dropped a 99-69 contest at Michigan State in the season opener, but the Falcons then picked up a 99-76 win over Marshall in the home opener. The Brown and Orange then captured a 61-60 last-second victory against Robert Morris before downing Loyola Chicago, 88-74, at the Stroh Center.
BG lost a narrow 81-80 decision at Coastal Carolina (Nov. 23), before falling to Mercer by a 76-63 score (Nov. 25) two days later. Both of those games were part of the Coastal Carolina Tournament. Xavier picked up a 65-49 win over BG on Nov. 29, but the Falcons responded with the 21-point road win over Canisius.
The Falcons are 3-0 at home, 1-3 on the road and 0-1 in neutral-site contests this season to date.
Head coach Robyn Fralick is in her first season on the BGSU bench. Her staff includes associate head coach Kim Cameron, assistant coach/recruiting coordinator Karmen Graham, assistant coach Joel Whymer, director of operations Monique Rosati and video coordinator Amanda Cutcher.
Eight games into the schedule, three players are scoring in double digits. Freshman Morgan McMillen has 17.5 points per game, and is shooting 47.4 percent from the field. McMillen tied the school single-game record with eight triples vs. Marshall (in her second collegiate game), and she is shooting 43.3% from the arc, having gone 29-for-67 from long range.
Sophomore Angela Perry, who missed the MSU game due to injury, has 14.6 points per game and is shooting 64.1% from the floor. Perry obliterated her previous career scoring high in the Marshall game, with 25 points, and had 24 vs. Loyola and 19 at Xavier. She has already topped her point total for all of last season.
Junior Andrea Cecil has 13.9 ppg to date, and she is second on the Falcons in rebounding, with 4.5 boards per game. Cecil, who has had 19 or more points four times in eight games this season, is shooting 51.5% from three-point land, having hit 17-of-33 long-distance attempts.
Senior Sydney Lambert is averaging 9.4 ppg and leads the team with 4.1 assists per contest. Lambert, who had a career-high 10 rebounds vs. Loyola, had 21 points against Coastal Carolina. She has hit 14 three-pointers, and is fourth on the Falcons with 3.8 boards per outing.
Freshman Kadie Hempfling and sophomore Madisen Parker have 6.5 and 5.3 ppg, respectively. Hempfling has a BG-best 9.0 rebounds per game, and she is also averaging 3.6 assists per game to rank second on the Falcons in that category. Parker has hit 9-of-25 shots from three-point range.
The 2018-19 roster includes two seniors, three juniors, two redshirt sophomores, four true sophs and four frosh. Lambert and Maddie Cole comprise the senior class.
Cecil, Caterrion Thompson and Jane Uecker each enter their junior season, while Alyssa Dean and Clare Glowniak are the redshirt sophs. Dean, a transfer from Memphis, will be eligible following the conclusion of the fall semester.
The sophomore class includes Parker, Perry, Terri Battle and Sierra Thompson, while Hempfling, McMillen, Molly Dever and Sydney Palermo make up the freshman class.
Cecil, Lambert and McMillen have started all eight games, while Glowniak and Hempfling each have made seven starts and Perry and Uecker one apiece.
BGSU returned a total of 10 letterwinners, including three starters, from last year's team that finished with an 11-19 overall record and a 3-15 mark in Mid-American Conference play. The Falcons went 6-8 at the Stroh Center, 4-11 in road games and 1-0 in neutral-site contests a year ago.
THREE-MARKABLE, THREE-MENDOUS, THREE-LIGHTFUL, THREE-POSTEROUS
Through the years, BGSU rosters typically have been stocked with players who can score from three-point range. Last year, for the third-straight season, a total of 12 different Falcons hit at least one three-pointer.
Three years ago, the Falcons made at least four three-point field goals in all 28 contests. In 2016-17, BGSU connected at least four times in 27 of the 31 games, and last year, the Falcons made four or more treys in 27 of the 30 games. This year, BG has hit at least five triples in every game, and the Falcons have made at least nine treys in five contests, including a school record-tying 16 against Marshall.
In fact, BG has knocked down four or more three-pointers in 122 of the last 130 games, dating to late in the 2013-14 season.
BGSU will be looking to extend a mucho-impressive streak in the Detroit Mercy game. The Falcons have hit at least one three-pointer in each of the last 438 games. BG has not been held without a triple in close to 14 years – since Feb. 12, 2005, at Akron, when the Falcons won, 61-52, despite going 0-of-13 from long distance.
A QUICK LOOK AT DETROIT MERCY
Detroit Mercy is 2-7 on the season, and the Titans are looking to snap a three-game losing streak. Most recently, Western Michigan topped the Titans, 54-44, on Saturday (Dec. 9). Lexey Tobel leads the team with 11.8 points per game, while two of her teammates are averaging over nine points per contest. Head coach Bernard Scott welcomed back five letterwinners, including two starters, from last season. The 2017-18 Titans went 2-28 overall and 2-16 in Horizon League play.
THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Detroit Mercy, 14-10, in the all-time series, and BG has captured the last eight meetings. BG's 85-81 win in the Motor City last season marked the teams' first meeting since 2011. BGSU is 7-4 at home and 7-6 on the road vs. the Titans over the years.
DOWN THE ROAD
Following the UDM game, the Falcons will head to Northwest Indiana for a Friday (Dec. 21) game vs. Valparaiso. That contest will begin at 5:00 p.m. local time (6:00 p.m. ET) at the Athletics-Recreation Center.
