UP NEXT FOR THE FALCONS...Â
The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team begins the December schedule with a trip to Buffalo, N.Y. Head coach Robyn Fralick and the Falcons will face Canisius College on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 8), with tipoff set for 2:00 p.m. at the Koessler Athletic Center.
Then, after a break for exam week, the Brown and Orange will return to the Stroh Center to face Detroit Mercy on Monday, Dec. 17. That game, which will be the Falcons' first home contest in nearly a month, will begin at 7:00 p.m.
LAMBERT'S LEAVING A LEGACY...
One anagram for "Sydney Lambert" is "merely stand by", but that phrase could not be less accurate when describing the senior guard. Lambert has been an important part of the Falcons' lineup since the day she arrived on campus, and is adding her name to numerous BGSU career charts.
LAMBERT'S LEGACY II: START ME UP
Lambert has started every game since coming to BG, and has made 96 career starts entering the Canisius game. If she is in the lineup on Saturday, she would tie Angie Bonner (97 starts from 1986-90) for 14th on the school career list.
BG has at least 23 games left on the 2018-19 schedule, meaning Lambert has a chance to finish her career as high as fifth in school history in games started. BGSU Hall-of-Famers Kate Achter (124 from 2004-08) and Jackie Motycka (115 from 1985-89) rank fourth and fifth, respectively, on the BG list for career starts.
LAMBERT'S LEGACY III: THOUSAND POINTS OF LIGHT
Lambert enters the Canisius game with a career total of 948 points. She has averaged between 9.4 and 10.4 points per game in every season at BG, and is averaging 9.9 ppg both this year and in her career.Â
She currently ranks 29th in school history in points scored, and is 52 points away from becoming the 28th BGSU player to earch the 1,000-point mark for her career.
LAMBERT'S LEGACY IV: SYD-THREE LAMBERT
Lambert has made a total of 199 three-point field goals in her BGSU career. She is one long-range bucket away from becoming just the fourth Falcon to make 200 career three-pointers. Lambert is averaging just over two treys per game in her career, and if she keeps up that pace, she will move past Liz Honegger (216 three-pointers from 2003-07) and Tracy Pontius (235 from 2007-11) to finish her career in second place.
EYASSES (IT'S THE PLURAL OF EYAS) (LOOK IT UP)
A total of seven players have seen action in all seven games this season to date. That group includes one senior, one junior, two sophomores (including one redshirt soph) and three freshmen.
Three additional Falcons have seen action in at least five of the seven games. That trio consists of two sophomores and the remaining freshman.
In BG's last six games, the starting lineup has included two freshmen and a sophomore. Two games ago, all five of BGSU's players who saw action off the bench vs. Mercer were either freshmen or sophomores. In the Xavier game, all but 21 seconds of time off the bench went to either frosh or sophs.
PERRY'S PROLIFIC IN THE POST
Sophomore Angela Perry has been making her presence felt in the post for the Falcons this season. She scored a team-high 19 points off the bench, and tied her career rebounding high with seven.
Perry, who missed the non-conference portion of her freshman season due to injury, had a season-high total of nine points on two occasions last year, but she nearly tripled that total in her first 2018-19 game, with 25 points vs. Marshall.
In fact, the Xavier game marked the third time in six contests that Perry scored at least 19 points. The Rochester, Ill., native is averaging 15.2 points per game this season, good for second on the Falcons, and she is shooting 62.7 percent from the field to date.
Perry, after scoring 75 points in 18 games last winter, has 91 points in just six games this year.
MORGAN McMAKIN'
Freshman Morgan McMillen is off to a tremendous start to her collegiate career, to say the least. McMillen was held to two points in the Xavier game, but still leads the Falcons with an average of 18.0 points per contest. McMillen has made at least three three-point field goals five times in her first seven games, with a total of five or more triples in three contests. She tied the school single-game record by making eight treys vs. Marshall, in just her second collegiate game.
McMillen became the first BGSU player to score in double digits in each of the first six games of the season in eight years. That feat was achieved only six other times over the last 25 years. In that quarter century, McMillen is the only BG freshman to hit double figures in each of the first six games.
KADIE KAN DO
Freshman Kadie Hempfling is one of the most well-rounded players on the Falcons. Hempfling is averaging 6.4 points per game, good for fifth on the team, despite having attempted just over five shots per contest.
The Ottawa, Ohio, native leads BG in rebounding with 8.9 boards per game. She has led the Falcons in that category five times in her seven career games, and has had at least seven rebounds five times. Hempfling is averaging 14.0 rebounds per game in BG's wins.
And, for good measure, Hempfling is one of the top passers on the team. She ranks second in assists, with 3.3 helpers per game, and has had six or more assists on two occasions. For comparison's sake, no BG player had more than five assists in a game during all of last season.
LAST TIME OUT: FALCONS FALL IN MORNING MATCHUP AT XAVIER
Aly Reiff scored 11 of her game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter, leading Xavier to a 65-49 win over the Falcons on Thursday morning/afternoon, Nov. 29, at the Cintas Center.
Sophomore Angela Perry had a team-leading 19 points for BGSU (3-4).
The Falcons had a higher field-goal percentage and outrebounded the Musketeers (5-1), but Xavier scored 24 points off of 22 BGSU turnovers in the contest.
Reiff was a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range in the final quarter. Her first triple of the period, on the opening possession, gave the hosts an 11-point lead.
Then, midway through the quarter, the Falcons had cut the deficit to four points, and BG forced the Musketeers into a one-and-out possession. But, a corner three that would have made it a one-point game hit the rim and bounced away, and Reiff knocked down a long-range attempt on the next possession. Then, a steal resulted in a layup for the hosts, and Reiff's final trey of the game gave her team a 12-point lead with just over two minutes to go.
The Falcons shot 35.4 percent from the field to the hosts' 34.9%, and BGSU held a 36-35 advantage on the boards. But, BG turned the ball over 22 times, while Xavier coughed it up just 10 times.
Junior Andrea Cecil had nine points, while senior Sydney Lambert scored seven. Freshman Kadie Hempfling paced the Falcons with eight rebounds and six assists, while Perry had seven boards to go along with her 19 points.
Reiff, as mentioned, scored 21 points, going 5-for-8 from the arc. A'riana Gray had 16 points and 18 of her team's 35 rebounds. Na'Teshia Owens rounded out the game's double-digit scorers with 13 points.
THE FALCONS: A QUICK OVERVIEW
BGSU enters the Canisius game with a record of 3-4 on the young season, and the Falcons are looking to snap a three-game losing streak. After winning three-straight games at the Stroh Center, the Falcons dropped a pair of contests in Conway, S.C., over the Thanksgiving holiday, then fell at Xavier to end the November slate.
BG dropped a 99-69 contest at Michigan State in the season opener, but the Falcons then picked up a 99-76 win over Marshall in the home opener. The Brown and Orange then captured a 61-60 last-second victory against Robert Morris before downing Loyola Chicago, 88-74, at the Stroh Center.
BG lost a narrow 81-80 decision at Coastal Carolina (Nov. 23), before falling to Mercer by a 76-63 score (Nov. 25) two days later. Both of those games were part of the Coastal Carolina Tournament. Xavier picked up a 65-49 win over BG on Nov. 29.
The Falcons are 3-0 at home, 0-3 on the road and 0-1 in neutral-site contests this season to date.
BGSU returned a total of 10 letterwinners, including three starters, from last year's team that finished with an 11-19 overall record and a 3-15 mark in Mid-American Conference play. The Falcons went 6-8 at the Stroh Center, 4-11 in road games and 1-0 in neutral-site contests a year ago.
Head coach Robyn Fralick is in her first season on the BGSU bench. Her staff includes associate head coach Kim Cameron, assistant coach/recruiting coordinator Karmen Graham, assistant coach Joel Whymer, director of operations Monique Rosati and video coordinator Amanda Cutcher.
Seven games into the schedule, three players are scoring in double digits, with a fourth Falcon just a point away. Freshman Morgan McMillen has 20.7 points per game, and is shooting 47.6 percent from the field. McMillen tied the school single-game record with eight triples vs. Marshall (in her second collegiate game), and she is shooting 43.1% from the arc, having gone 25-for-58 from long range.
Sophomore Angela Perry, who missed the MSU game due to injury, has 15.2 points per game and is shooting 62.7% from the floor. Perry obliterated her previous career scoring high in the Marshall game, with 25 points, and had 24 vs. Loyola and 19 at Xavier. She has already topped her point total for all of last season.
Junior Andrea Cecil has 13.1 ppg to date, and she is second on the Falcons in rebounding, with 4.7 boards per game. Cecil, who had game-high totals of 19 points at Michigan State and 20 vs. Marshall, scored 21 vs. Mercer, and is shooting 51.9% from three-point land, having hit 14-of-27 long-distance attempts.
Senior Sydney Lambert is averaging 9.9 ppg and leads the team with 3.9 assists per contest. Lambert, who had a career-high 10 rebounds vs. Loyola, had 21 points against Coastal Carolina. She has hit 12 three-pointers, and is fourth on the Falcons with 3.7 boards per outing.
Freshman Kadie Hempfling and sophomore Madisen Parker have 6.4 and 4.9 ppg, respectively. Hempfling has a BG-best 8.9 rebounds per game, and she is also averaging 3.3 assists per game to rank second on the Falcons in that category. Parker has hit 7-of-18 shots from three-point range.
The 2018-19 roster includes two seniors, three juniors, two redshirt sophomores, four true sophs and four frosh. Lambert and Maddie Cole comprise the senior class.
Cecil, Caterrion Thompson and Jane Uecker each enter their junior season, while Alyssa Dean and Clare Glowniak are the redshirt sophs. Dean, a transfer from Memphis, will be eligible following the conclusion of the fall semester.
The sophomore class includes Parker, Perry, Terri Battle and Sierra Thompson, while Hempfling, McMillen, Molly Dever and Sydney Palermo make up the freshman class.
Lambert is the Falcons' top returning scorer, having averaged 9.9 points per game last winter. She also hit a team-high 60 three-pointers in 2017-18. Cecil averaged 8.8 points and 5.0 boards last year, while Caterrion Thompson had 6.3 ppg and knocked down 34 three-pointers. Cecil is the top returning rebounder, while Thompson led the Falcons in three-point accuracy (41.5%) a year ago.
Thompson has yet to play this season due to injury.Â
Cecil, Lambert and McMillen have started all seven games this year, while Glowniak and Hempfling each have made six starts and Perry and Uecker one apiece.
A QUICK LOOK AT CANISIUS
Canisius is 1-7 on the season, and the Golden Griffins have dropped the last two games, to Youngstown State and Buffalo. Most recently, UB topped the Griffs, 84-66, on Tuesday (Dec. 4). Sara Hinriksdottir leads the team with 12.6 points per game, pacing three double-figure scorers. The team's win came on the road vs. Albany.
Scott Hemer is in his first season as head coach of the Griffs, who went 10-20 overall and 8-10 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play a year ago.
THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Canisius, 2-1, in the all-time series, but the Griffs' lone series victory came last season. CC came to BG and picked up a 71-57 win inside the Stroh Center (Nov. 19, 2017). The Falcons won December matchups in back-to-back years, with a 2009 win in Western New York and a 2010 victory at venerable Anderson Arena. BGSU is 1-1 at home and 1-0 on the road vs. the Griffs.
BGSU-CANISIUS NOTES
