Epic Run Propels Falcons to 74-53 Win at Canisius

BGSU scores 22-straight points to blow Saturday's game wide open
The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team scored 22-straight points to break Saturday's (Dec. 8) game wide open, and the Falcons went on to post a 74-53 victory at Canisius College. The non-conference matchup was held at the Koessler Athletic Center.
The Falcons, now 4-4 on the season, seized control of the game by scoring the last 19 points of the first quarter. BG hit a three-point field goal, one of 13 successful triples on the day, to begin the second period and cap the 22-point run.
After Canisius got a layup to stop that run, BGSU proceeded to score the next eight points to take a 38-10 lead. BG led by as many as 36 points late in the third quarter, and the Falcons still led by 30, 66-36, at the day's final media timeout before a late rally got the Griffs got within the final 21-point margin.
Junior Andrea Cecil had 19 points to pace three double-digit scorers, while freshman Morgan McMillen added 14 points and sophomore Angela Perry 11. Freshman Kadie Hempfling had seven points, 10 rebounds, six assists and three steals, while senior Sydney Lambert had six points and six assists.
In the win over the Golden Griffins, Lambert became just the fourth player in school history to make 200 three-point field goals in her career.
One of those triples came during a barrage in which the Falcons connected four times from beyond the arc in a span of under 90 seconds. After missing the first six three-point tries of the day, the Falcons hit five consecutive long-range shots late in the first quarter.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"I loved our start today. I loved our energy; we were really excited to get back after our last road game. We had a full week to practice and get better at some things. One of the things we focused on was taking care of the ball, and we also focused on consistently competing and communicating. We were much improved in those areas today."
FALCONS TAKE CONTROL
• While BGSU posted many impressive statistics in Saturday's win, some of the numbers through the first three quarters were downright eye-popping. The Falcons led by as many as 36 points late in that third period before the period ended with BG up by a 63-30 score.
• After three quarters, the Falcons were shooting 48.9 percent from the field, while holding Canisius to just a 21.2% success rate.
• BG had made 11 three-point field goals in the first three quarters, while the Griffs had hit 11 total shots.
• The Falcons turned the ball over just seven times in the opening 30 minutes, while coming up with eight steals on 11 Canisius turnovers. BG held a 17-3 lead in points off turnovers in the first three periods.
LAMBERT HITS 200
• Senior Sydney Lambert made a pair of three-point field goals in Saturday's win, putting her over 200 for her career. Lambert now has hit a total of 201 triples as a Falcon, the fourth-highest total in school history.
• Lambert is averaging just over two treys per game in her career, and if she keeps up that pace, she will move past Liz Honegger (216 three-pointers from 2003-07) and Tracy Pontius (235 from 2007-11) to finish her career in second place.
FIRST-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• The Falcons never trailed in the game, and BGSU twice took four-point leads in the early going, only to see the Golden Griffins rally to tie the score.
• The Griffs got a bucket from Sara Hinriksdottir at the 4:59 mark to tie the score at 8-8, but that basket would prove to be the home team's final points of the period.
• A steal by sophomore Angela Perry was followed by senior Sydney Lambert's long pass ahead to junior Andrea Cecil for a bucket and a 10-8 lead. That layup began the Falcons' 22-0 run that extended into the second period.
• BG got the ball back after a Canisius miss, and Cecil found freshman Morgan McMillen for a three-pointer and a 13-8 lead, prompting a timeout by the Griffs at the 3:32 mark.
• That timeout did nothing to slow the Falcons, however, as BG would hit four more three-pointers in a span of under 90 seconds. Perry kicked the ball out to Hempfling for a triple at the 2:54 mark, and a Hempfling steal led to a McMillen triple just 27 seconds later.
• Hempfling assisted on the next two triples, whipping a cross-court pass to a wide-open Lambert for a left-side trey, then finding McMillen for a right-wing three and a 25-8 lead with 1:26 left in the quarter.
• After a defensive stop in the final minute of the period, Hempfling came up with the rebound, and the Falcons held for the last shot. Hempfling drove inside and scored in the waning seconds, giving the Brown and Orange a 27-8 lead after 10 minutes.
SECOND-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• Canisius had the ball to begin the quarter, but within the first 10 seconds, McMillen made a headlong dive to the floor to cause a jump ball and give possession to the Falcons. On the ensuing possession, Hempfling kicked the ball out to Perry for a triple from the top of the arc. The run was 22-0, and the BG lead was 30-8.
• Maria Welch converted a layup for the hosts at the 8:13 mark, but Perry fed McMillen for the freshman's fourth three-pointer of the day, and a Cecil three-point try barely moved the net. When Cecil got an acrobatic layup to go, the Falcons had scored eight-straight points to take a 38-10 lead midway through the period.
• The hosts scored the game's next five points, but three-pointers by Cecil and Lambert gave the Falcons a 44-20 lead heading into the half.
THIRD-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• Redshirt sophomore Clare Glowniak hit a nifty turnaround banker on BG's first possession of the quarter, then drove and scored several minutes later.
• Perry then scored five-straight points as the Falcons increased the lead to over 30 points for the first time. The soph's layup that capped that run gave the Brown and Orange a 53-21 lead with 5:33 left in the period.
• The hosts got a layup from Tiana Pugh, but moments later, Cecil's three-ball gave the Falcons a game-high 36-point lead. The Falcons held a 33-point advantage after 30 minutes of play.
FOURTH-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• After making just 11 field goals in the first three quarters, the Griffs went 9-for-18 from the field in the fourth quarter, with the game's outcome no longer in the balance.
• The Falcons made just three fourth-period buckets, including a McMillen layup after she alertly cut toward the basket and took a Lambert pass with seven minutes to go.
• Sophomore Madisen Parker connected on a pair of three-point tries in the final period, while senior Maddie Cole went 3-of-4 from the free-throw line in the final period.
• The Griffs narrowed the margin to 21 points – the closest the game had been since early in the second period – but it was too little, too late.
STATISTICS
• The Falcons shot 45.6 percent from the field for the game, while holding Canisius to a success rate of just 28.6%.
• BGSU went 13-for-24 from three-point range (37.1%), while Canisius went 5-for-24 (20.8%) from the arc.
• Hinriksdottir led the Griffs with 18 points, and she also had a game-high 17 rebounds as Canisius held a 46-39 advantage on the glass.
• BGSU turned the ball over just 13 times in the game, including only seven in the first three quarters.
• The Falcons had 20 assists on 26 baskets. Both Lambert and Hempfling had six assists in the win.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons are now idle for over a week due to fall semester exams. BGSU is next in action on Monday, Dec. 17, when Detroit Mercy comes to the Stroh Center for a 7:00 p.m. matchup.
