Talisa Lemke Finishes in Top Half of One-Meter Field at NCAA Championships
March 15, 2018 | Women's Swimming & Diving
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Bowling Green State University sophomore diver Talisa Lemke made a successful debut at the NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday (March 15). Entering the meet, her shared goal with BGSU diving coach Tricia Grant was to have fun and enjoy the meet while competing for a spot in the top 16. Lemke succeeded on both fronts. She placed 23rd out of a 49-diver field with 276.95 points and missed the top 16, which would have meant qualifying for the finals, by just 8.5 points. The 2018 Mid-American Conference champion on the one-meter boards is BGSU's first diving representative at the NCAA Championships since 1988.

"Talisa could not have done better. That was just amazing," said Grant. "Most student-athletes in their first time at NCAAs, they're excited to break into the top 40, so for Talisa to finish in the 20s was huge. It doesn't get any better than that. There were divers who have been here two or three times that did not make the top 16, so that's huge."
Lemke's performance across the board was incredibly consistent. She earned a top score of 46.80 and accomplished that on four of her six dives, including both with the highest degree of difficulty. She also earned a 46.00 on her back 1.5 somersault pike, a dive that earned 7.0s from three of the seven judges. As a result, she remained in contention for the top 16 throughout the preliminary round. She also battled her fellow co-MAC Diver of the Year Pei Lin during the opening set of dives, finishing just two spots and 2.25 points behind a diver who is a three-time All-American and who has twice placed in the national top-ten in one-meter diving.
Lemke will now set her sights on the three-meter diving competition. She dives from the higher boards at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion beginning at 11:30 a.m.; if she finishes 9th-16th and reaches the consolation finals, that will be held 15 minutes after the conclusion of the preliminary round. If she finishes 1st-8th and reaches the championship final, that will be held during the evening session. Friday's evening session starts at 5:00 p.m. and will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU.
