FOUR THINGS TO KNOW
• Wednesday's doubleheader vs. Miami was originally a single game, but a second game was added after the Falcons and RedHawks saw last week's scheduled DH cancelled due to inclement weather in Oxford. MU will be the designated home team in Wednesday's first game, while the Falcons will be the home team for the nightcap.
• BGSU has a record of 4-17 against teams ranked 155th or better in the latest RPI rankings, but the Falcons are 14-1 vs. schools ranked lower than 155th. BG's next eight games, and 13 of the team's next 14 contests, are against teams ranked 169th or lower in the current RPI.
• BGSU assistant coach Lauren Gambone returns to her alma mater this weekend. Gambone, in her second season on the Falcons' coaching staff, played her final two collegiate seasons for the Bulls, seeing action in a total of 99 games during that time. BGSU's last trip to UB came two years ago, and Gambone – a senior on that 2016 UB club – went 5-for-9 with seven RBI in three games vs. the Falcons.Â
• Twice this season, a BGSU batter has been intentionally walked, and both times, the Falcons have gone on to score four runs over the remainder of that inning. On Saturday at Toledo, BG put that four-spot on the board very quickly. After senior Aspen Searle was given an intentional pass to load the bases with two outs, junior Kali Holcomb hit a grand slam to center field. Holcomb increased her team-leading totals to seven homers (including two grand slams) and 34 RBI this season.
WELL THEN, THIS WOULD BE MORE, WOULDN'T IT?
• BGSU has homered 28 times in the first 36 contests, after hitting a total of 16 home runs in 56 games last spring.
• Eight different BG players have hit a round-tripper this season to date. A total of six different BGSU players hit a homer during all of last year.
• In 2017, BGSU's leader in home runs (Chelsea Raker) had six, and the Falcons had two players with more than two homers on the year. This season, junior Kali Holcomb already has seven homers, and she is one of six players with more than two dingers.
FASCINATING FALCON FACTS
• BGSU enters the week with an overall record of 18-18. The Falcons have hit .292 as a team in the first 36 games, while allowing the opponents to bat just .241.
• BGSU is off to a 1-8 start in league action, after winning the middle game of a three-game series vs. Ball State and dropping three contests to both Western Michigan and Toledo. The Falcons are 2-5 in home games, 3-10 in true road contests and 13-3 in neutral-site games this season to date.
• The Falcons have three starters hitting at least .320, with two others batting over .280. Four of those five players are slugging .440 or better and have at least 10 extra-base hits this year.
• Junior Alex Sorgi is batting .373 on the season, and enters the Miami DH with a nine-game hitting streak. She leads the Falcons in hits (44) and stolen bases (13), is tied for second on the team in runs (21) and ranks second in walks (14). Sorgi paces the Brown and Orange with 13 multiple-hit games.
• Senior Aspen Searle is batting .358 and has scored a team-high 25 runs. Searle has a BG-best 18 extra-base hits, including team-leading totals of 11 doubles and two triples, and she is ranked on the BGSU career lists in multiple offensive categories.
• Junior Kali Holcomb is hitting .324 and tops the team with seven homers and 34 RBI. She has 15 extra-base hits and leads the Falcons with a slugging percentage of .618. Holcomb has 11 multiple-RBI games, nearly double the total of any of her teammates.
• Freshmen Sammy Dees and Sarah Gonzalez are hitting .294 and .284, respectively. Both players have 10 extra-base hits and 15 RBI. Gonzalez is tied with Searle for second on the team with five homers. Dees has seven doubles to rank third on the club, and she is also third with 10 multi-hit games.
• Sophomore Logan Everett and junior Hannah Giammarino are batting .303 and .290, respectively, in limited action this season to date.
• Senior Laine Simmons is hitting .266 and juniors Kaylee Parker and Kellie Natham are batting .250 and .239, respectively. Parker has 19 RBI to rank second on the team, and hit a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game vs. WMU. Simmons, like Parker, has three homers, and the catcher has a .438 slugging pct. Natham has started 26 of the last 31 games after missing the season's first five contests.
• Through 36 games, BGSU has a total of 279 hits to the opponents' 215. BG has 80 extra-base hits, compared to 64 for Falcon foes.
• Six Falcons – Dees, Gonzalez, Holcomb, Kaylee Parker, Searle and Alex Sorgi – have started all 36 games this year, while Natham and Simmons each have made 26 starts.
• In the circle, junior Meredith Miller is 9-11 with an ERA of 3.15 and 121 strikeouts in 111 innings of work. She has allowed opponents to hit just .232 against her.
• Junior Brooke Parker is 8-5 with a 3.47 ERA in 88 2/3 innings, and has topped her win total for all of last season. Classmate Kiley Sosby has pitched 25 innings and is 1-2 with a 4.76 ERA. Parker has two saves and Sosby one, and Sosby has allowed opponents to hit just .198.
• Freshman Madison French has pitched in eight games, including five in the MAC, while classmate Olivia Riener has seen action in two games, both in league play.
ASPEN RECORD WATCH
• Senior Aspen Searle has added her name to the BGSU record book on nearly every career batting list kept by the school. Searle currently ranks third on three BGSU career lists – at-bats (668), hits (219) and total bases (348) – and she is fourth in doubles (45), tied for fourth in both games started (206) and runs scored (117), and deadlocked for fifth in RBI (109).
• Searle is sixth on three additional lists –games played (210), home runs (24), and slugging pct. (.521) – and seventh on another (batting average; .328). Searle's name also can be found on the career lists for sacrifice flies (T-eighth) and walks (15th).
• Additionally, Searle is ranked among the NCAA's active career leaders in five categories. Among current Division-I players, Searle is 36th or higher in career games played, at-bats, hits, doubles and total bases.
ALEX ADDS HER NAME TO SEVERAL LISTS, TOO
• Junior Alex Sorgi has etched her name on several BGSU lists as well. Sorgi is sixth in school history with 36 career stolen bases, and is just four steals away from third place (Kim Still, 40 SB from 1988-90). Sorgi is currently ranked sixth in school annals in hitting as well, with a career batting average of .328 entering the week.
A QUICK LOOK AT THE OPPONENTS
• Miami has an overall record of 14-17, and the RedHawks will bring a 3-6 MAC mark to Meserve Field. MU opened conference action by winning two of three games at Northern Illinois, but the RedHawks dropped all three games at Central Michigan, then lost two of three games at Eastern Michigan last weekend. Megan Wurts is the lone MU player batting over .300. She is hitting .358, while three of her fellow starters are batting .272 or higher. Courtney Vierstra has thrown 114 of MU's 197 innings in the circle, and she leads the team with 10 wins and a 2.39 ERA. Head coach Clarisa Crowell welcomed back 10 letterwinners from last year's team that went 29-24 overall and 14-9 in the MAC.
• Buffalo is 13-20 on the year, and the Bulls are 5-6 in MAC action heading into a Wednesday game at Akron. UB has already topped last year's overall and conference win totals. The Bulls have posted sweeps of a three-game series vs. Eastern Michigan and a DH vs. Akron, but have been swept by Northern Illinois and Central Michigan. Jessica Goldyn is betting .400 entering the week, while Jenelle Martinez and Anna Aguon are hitting .372 and .340, respectively. Ally Power has started 20 of UB's 33 games in the circle, and is 10-11 with a 4.25 ERA. Last year, the Bulls went 9-46 overall and 3-21 in the MAC. First-year head coach Mike Roberts inherited 14 returnees from that club.
THE SERIES
•  The Falcons lead Miami, 54-51, in the all-time series between the teams. The squads split a doubleheader at Meserve Field just under a year ago (April 4, 2017), before the 'Hawks captured a 5-4 decision in Oxford eight days later. The teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader in Oxford last week (April 3), but the twinbill was washed away due to inclement weather. The Falcons are 36-16 at home, 13-30 on the road and 5-5 in neutral-site meetings with the Redskins/RedHawks over the years.
• The Falcons lead Buffalo, 25-12, in that series, and BG swept last year's three-game series at Meserve Field, with three narrow victories. Two years ago, when the teams last met in Buffalo, the Bulls scored at least nine runs in each game en route to a three-game sweep of the Brown and Orange. The Falcons are 12-7 at home, 11-5 on the road and 2-0 in neutral-site matchups with UB since the dawn of time.
COMING UP...
• Following this week's action, BGSU will head to Akron to face the Zips in a three-game series next weekend (April 20-21).
• Then, BG steps outside of MAC play for a game at Notre Dame on Tuesday, April 24, before returning home for a three-game set vs. Kent State (April 27-28).
Â
• Then, the Brown and Orange will head to Western New York for a three-game weekend series against the University at Buffalo. The Falcons and Bulls are scheduled to meet in a Friday (April 13) single game, beginning at 3:00 p.m., followed by a 1:00 p.m. Saturday (April 14) twinbill. All three games will take place at Nan Harvey Field.
