Volleyball Hosts Purdue Fort Wayne Saturday For Exhibition Match

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The 2018 season for the Bowling Green State University volleyball program unofficially begins this Saturday (Aug. 18), as the Falcons welcome Purdue Fort Wayne to the Stroh Center for an exhibition match. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

"I'm very happy to have this exhibition against Purdue Fort Wayne. They are always a good, competitive team. What you are looking for is seeing someone else across the net. We are going to try different lineups, and give opportunity to younger players that didn't get a lot of playing time last year … and just see how the things that we are doing in practice are transferring in a game situation."

HOME EXHIBITION PLAY
• For the first time in the Danijela Tomic era, the Falcons will host an exhibition game.
• Last season, a rule was passed allowing programs to play an exhibition match. Bowling Green played at Purdue Fort Wayne last season in exhibition play, winning a five-set match.
THE DEFENDING CHAMPIONS
• Bowling Green went 13-3 in the MAC a season ago, winning the final three matches of the season to clinch a share of the regular-season MAC crown.
• BGSU won at Buffalo, 3-1, on the last day of the regular season to secure its share of the title.
• The Falcons ultimately were defeated in the semifinals of the MAC Tournament by Western Michigan.
• The Orange and Brown received a bid to play in the first-annual National Invitational Volleyball Tournament. The Falcons lost a tough five-set match at Green Bay in the opening round.
FAMILIAR FACES
• A total of 14 Falcons that appeared on last year's roster return for the 2018 season, including a plethora of All-MAC talent.
• Senior Kallie Seimet led the nation in digs per set in 2017 (6.81). Her historic season earned her First Team All-MAC honors. She was also named the MAC's Defensive Player of the Year, on top of being the conference's Co-Player of the Year.
• Junior Isabelle Marciniak was named to the MAC's Honorable Mention team in 2017, while Katie Kidwell earned a place on the All-Freshman Team.
• Danijela Tomic was named the 2017 MAC Coach of the Year.
NEWCOMERS IN 2018
• After last season's 17-12 finish that saw BGSU capture its second MAC title under head coach Danijela Tomic, the Falcons return all but one player from last season's roster.
• Nicole Slimko graduated from last year's team, but Bowling Green welcomes four new Falcons into the fold in 2018.
• Nikolija Katanic (Belgrade, Serbia / Sesta Beogradska Gimnazija), Hanna Laube (Burlington, Ontario, Candad / Dr. Frank J. Hayden Secondary School), Katelyn Meyer (Pemberville, Ohio / Eastwood), and Julia Walz (Brooklyn, Ohio / Brooklyn) are all freshmen on this year's team.
