Bowling Green Ranked No. 10 In USCHO Poll
January 07, 2019 | Ice Hockey
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University hockey team is ranked No. 10 in this week's official USCHO poll. Bowling Green climbs back into the top 10 in the national rankings for the first time since Nov. 12 when they were No. 10. The Falcons' highest rank of the season was on Oct. 29 when BGSU was No. 9.
This comes after Bowling Green closed the month of December with a sweep of then-No. 3 ranked conference rival Minnesota State. The Falcons won both games over the weekend (Dec. 14-15) by final scores of 4-1, outscoring number three in the nation 8-2 in the series. In addition, with series victories over Western Michigan and Ohio State, Bowling Green now holds a 5-0-1 record this season when the opponent was ranked in the top 20 at the time of the contest. The Falcons have outscored those opponents 28-9.
It is believed to be Bowling Green's first sweep of a top 3 opponent since the weekend of Feb. 7-8, 1992 when the Falcons swept No. 1 Michigan in a home-and-home series. That '92 team would win a series against No. 3 Michigan State the following weekend by beating and tying the Spartans.
No. 10 Bowling Green is one of three WCHA teams in the poll, with Minnesota State dropping to No. 8, while Lake Superior State sits at No.18.
Most recently the Falcons split a home series with WCHA foe Bemidji State (Jan. 3-4) dropping the first game 3-2, and winning the second game 3-1. Bowling Green currently sits in second place in the WCHA standings with 31 points.
The No. 10 Falcons continue WCHA play this weekend as they travel to Houghton. Mich. for a two game series against the Huskies of Michigan Tech University (Jan. 11-12). Puck drop for both games is scheduled for 7:07 pm in John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
