November 30, 2019 | Women's Basketball
BGSU tops California Baptist, 98-60, in final contest in Canada
Junior Angela Perry exploded for 36 points, the third-highest single-game total in school history, to lead the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team to an emphatic win on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 30). The Falcons downed California Baptist University, 98-60, on third-day action at the Greater Victoria Invitational.
BGSU, now 4-3 on the season, shot better than 58 percent from the field, and the Falcons hit 15 three-point field goals, just one shy of the school single-game record.
The Brown and Orange had a whopping 48-21 rebounding advantage in the win over the Lancers (7-3).
Perry went 16-of-22 from the floor, knocking down both of her three-point tries vs. the Lancers. She also had five rebounds and tied for game honors with five assists. The assists total set a new career best for the BG junior.
Junior Mari Hill had the best game of her young Falcon career, with 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Hill was 7-of-11 from the floor, draining three three-point tries.
Fourth-year Falcon Caterrion Thompson had her second double-double in four games, with 11 points and a game- and career-high 13 rebounds. Thompson was one of five Falcons with at least three assists on the day, as BG had 25 assists on 38 field goals.
Sophomore Morgan McMillen scored nine points on perfect 3-of-3 shooting from the arc, while freshman Olivia Trice and junior Madisen Parker had eight points apiece.
Trice saw 22 minutes of action, the highest total of her young collegiate career. In addition to the eight points, she also had nine rebounds, and she tied Perry for game honors with five assists.
NOTE OF THE DAY: PERRY'S PROLIFIC PERFORMANCE
• Junior Angela Perry's total of 36 points is the third-highest single-game total in school history, and the highest total by a BG player not named Lauren Prochaska.
• Perry tied the school single-game record for field goals made, going 16-of-22 from the floor vs. the Lancers. Jacki Raterman made 16 buckets in a BG win over Ball State in January of 1999, but that win came after four overtimes.

QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"I was really proud of our team's effort today. We challenged them yesterday, in terms of things we thought we could control and do better, and I thought they responded really well to that. When everybody does more right things and everybody plays harder, the game changes for you, and your team changes."
"California Baptist is a very good team -- they took Stanford right down to the wire the other night -- and I thought our defensive effort was outstanding. I loved our response."
"Angela (Perry) is an outstanding scorer. We did a much better job of getting her the ball, and getting her the ball when she was open. She did a great job of finishing. We felt like, going into today's game, she could be a mismatch for us, and she did a great job of exploiting that."
"Olivia Trice always pays attention and is engaged, no matter what her role is. Today, she got her opportunity, and she was excellent. She was a great catalyst for our team. She makes the right play, she makes the smart play, and she really helped us today."
FIRST QUARTER
• In a harbinger of things to come, junior Angela Perry banked home a shot on the game's opening possession. The junior then spotted fourth-year Falcon Caterrion Thompson for a three-pointer and a 5-0 lead.
• A steal and layup by Delacy Brown got the Lancers on the board, but Perry stepped outside and hit a three-point try, and junior Madisen Parker rebounded her own miss and found Thompson for BG's third triple of the game and an 11-2 lead with just 3:19 gone. The Lancers burned a timeout.
• When Parker knocked down a pair of free-throw attempts exactly halfway through the period, the Falcons had a 13-4 lead. But, the Lancers got back into the game with a pair of run-out layups, then another driving shot inside. When Ane Olaeta hit a three-pointer from the top of the arc, the game was tied.
• Freshman Kaillie Hall, however, hit a runner in the final seconds of the period, giving the Brown and Orange a 15-13 lead after 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
• A pair of free throws tied the game, but Perry took a pass from Hall and hit a turnaround one-hander. The junior then was fouled inside and split a pair of charity tosses, and Perry then got ahead of the crowd as the Lancers' press failed to work. Junior Mari Hill fired a long pass ahead to Perry for an easy layup.
• Perry scored the Falcons' first seven points of the period, taking a pass from freshman Olivia Trice and knocking down a turnaround banker for a 22-16 lead.
• After sophomore Morgan McMillen took a CBU charge to give the ball back to BG, Hill passed the ball inside to Perry, cut toward the hoop and took a return pass for an easy layup. Lexy Ram knocked down a three-ball for the Lancers, but Hill fed Parker for a three-pointer, and Trice drove and ished to Perry for an easy layup and a 29-21 lead as the Lancers used another timeout.
• Then, Trice stepped outside the arc, took a Jane Uecker pass and hit a three-pointer for a 32-21 advantage. Perry went to work inside, scoring yet again, then kicked the ball out to Hill for a left-wing three-ball.
• The Perry-Hill inside-outside game worked to perfection again as Hill drained another long-distance attempt. BGSU ended the half on a 13-2 run, scoring the final eight points of the period for a 40-23 lead at the break.
THIRD QUARTER
• Thompson's entry pass resulted in a short jumper by Perry on the opening possession of the period. The Lancers countered with a three-pointer, but Parker came right back with a triple of her own.
• Again, Georgia Dale scored from the arc, but again, BG answered. Perry took a straightaway trey, and the net barely moved as the junior post hit her second long-range shot of the day. BG led, 48-29.
• Perry scored nine-straight BG points, hitting a turnaround floater, converting sophomore Kadie Hempfling's pass for an easy layup, then putting back her own miss to give the Falcons a 54-33 lead.
• Then, Perry's pass resulted in a Hill three-pointer, and Hill stole an errant pass near midcourt and sailed in for a layup. When Hempfling fed Perry for an 'and-one' layup and a three-point play, Perry had 30 points and BG had a 62-35 lead.
• Perry's bucket with 2:10 left in the quarter gave her 16 points in the period. Hempfling hit a layup, Trice split a pair of free throws, and Trice then jumped for route for a 'pick-six' layup in the final minute of the period.
• Finally, CBU got a free throw with 24.2 seconds on the clock, snapping a 15-0 BGSU run. But, Hill hit a right-side turnaround jumper with less than two seconds left in the quarter, giving the Falcons a 71-36 lead.
FOURTH QUARTER
• After scoring 31 points in the third quarter, BG would score 27 in the fourth. Trice's cross-court pass resulted in a Hempfling three, and Perry scored with four players around her.
• The Lancers scored five-straight points, including a layup by Gracie Champion, but Thompson knocked down a three-point try, then grabbed an offensive rebound, was fouled and hit two shots for an 81-46 lead.
• BG turned defense into offense, as freshman Elissa Brett grabbed a defensive rebound and fired a long outlet pass to Hall for a layup. Then, Hempfling's rebound and pass led to a Hill bucket and an 85-48 advantage.
• Perry scored inside with just under five minutes left, capping her epic day, and McMillen hit back-to-back deep three-pointers. McMillen would hit a third triple with 90 seconds to go, before Trice closed the Falcons' scoring on a bucket with just over a minute to go.
FINAL STATISTICS
• The Falcons shot 58.5 percent from the field, hitting 38 field goals in 65 attempts. CBU went 21-for-61 for a 34.4% success rate.
• Angela Perry's total of 16 field goals made fell just five shy of the Lancers' team total.
• The Falcons shot 50% from the arc in each half, going 7-for-14 before halftime and 8-for-16 after. BG's total of 15 three-pointers fell just one shy of the school single-game record.
