Perry scores 25 to pace five double-figure scorers at Marshall
The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team had an answer for Marshall University at every turn on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 7), as the Falcons posted an 82-69 win at the Cam Henderson Center.
Junior Angela Perry scored a game-high 25 points to pace five double-digit scorers for the Falcons (5-3) and classmate Madisen Parker had 16. Perry, who entered the game as one of the nation's leaders in field-goal percentage, was 11-of-13 from the floor vs. the Thundering Herd.
Parker scored 10 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter, including back-to-back three-pointers after the Herd had cut BG's lead to four points. Parker was 4-for-5 from the arc as the Falcons went 10-for-19 from long range as a team.
Junior Mari Hill scored 12 points and dished out a game-high eight assists, while sophomore Kadie Hempfling had a double-double, with 11 points and a game-best 12 rebounds. Fourth-year Falcon Caterrion Thompson had 10 points along with five assists in the win.
For the hosts (5-4), Kristen Mayo scored 21 points before fouling out, while Khadaijia Brooks had 15 points and 11 boards.
BGSU shot 56.9 percent from the field, including a 21-for-34 (61.8%) effort over the final three quarters. The Falcons, as mentioned, went 10-for-19 (52.6%) from three-point range and had a 41-34 rebounding advantage.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"This was a great team win on the road. I thought we took a step forward today. When we had a lead and they made a run, I loved our response. Madisen Parker made some really critical baskets, Angela Perry was a load today, and with that being said, this was a total team effort."
"I especially loved our effort on the defensive end down the stretch. They've got a lot of kids that can shoot the ball really well. I thought we weathered the storm very well, and I'm proud that we came away with the win."
FIRST QUARTER
• Junior Mari Hill hit a pull-up jumper late in the shot clock on BG's opening possession, and after sophomore Kadie Hempfling scored inside, Hill picked the pocket of Dazha Congleton and was fouled, knocking down both shots for a 6-2 lead.
• Congleton came back with a three-pointer to cut BG's lead to one, but after a blocked shot by junior Angela Perry, Caterrion Thompson scored in transition, and a Perry putback moments later gave the Falcons a 10-6 advantage.
• Perry hit a nifty one-hander after Hill's drive and dish, and Thompson fed Hempfling for a left-side three-pointer. The run was 7-0 and the lead was 15-6 as the Herd used a timeout.
• Thompson's left-wing three-ball was followed by a Hempfling layup for a 20-8 lead, but Khadaijia Brooks scored the game's next five points, beginning a 7-0 run for the hosts. When Savannah Wheeler's runner dropped in the final seconds of the period, BG's lead was down to five, at 20-15.
• After beginning the game by making 8-of-12 shots from the field, the Falcons missed five-straight attempts to end the quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
• Perry drilled a three-pointer out top after Hill tied up a Herd player for a jump ball. Wheeler scored from long range, but Thompson fed Hill, then junior Madisen Parker, for shots from the arc, giving the Brown and Orange a 29-20 lead.
• Kristen Mayo's three-point try bounced around and in, and she then hit a pull-up jumper to cut the Falcons' lead to four. Perry knocked down a pair of free throws, but Taylor Pearson hit a three, and Mayo followed suit, tying the game at 31-31.
• Thompson came right back with a three-ball of her own, but Brooks connected from the top of the arc. Perry lobbed the ball inside to Hempfling, who was fouled and hit both charity tosses, but Mayo knocked down another pull-up jumper, knotting the contest at 36.
• But, Perry and the Falcons responded with a 7-0 run to end the half. Perry was involved in all seven points. First, she hit a foul-line jumper after taking a pass from Hill. Then, she put back her own miss for a four-point lead. When Perry found freshman Elissa Brett for a corner three in the final seconds, the Falcons had a 43-36 lead at the break.
THIRD QUARTER
• The Herd scored the first five points of the quarter, with Mayo's triple cutting BG's lead to just two points. Perry slipped her defender, taking a pass from Hill and hitting a layup for a 45-41 lead.
• Moments later, Brett found Parker for a three-pointer, and Brett scored in transition for a 50-42 lead. Perry's turnaround shot made it a 10-point game before Congleton stopped BG's 7-0 run with a corner three.
• Brett hit a layup directly out of the media timeout, and the freshman then found Perry inside to restore the double-figure lead. When Thompson fed Perry for a short jumper, BG's lead was 58-45 and Marshall used a timeout.
• Mayo scored inside, before a Hill inbounds pass led to a Perry layup. The Herd scored five-straight points, with Mayo's deep three cutting BG's lead to 60-52. A free throw gave the Falcons a nine-point lead after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Hill knocked down a jumper with the shot clock winding down, but Paige Shy connected from long distance, one of Marshall's 13 triples on the day. Hempfling scored off of a Perry lob, and Thompson's nifty move resulted in a layup and a 67-58 lead.
• The Herd, however, scored five-straight points, with Mayo's three-pointer ending a scoreless stretch of nearly two minutes and cutting BG's lead to just four points, 67-63, with 5:25 to go.
• Parker proceeded to hit back-to-back triples to put the Falcons ahead by double digits. First, she took a pass from Hill and hit a shot from the left corner. Then, Hill spotted the junior in the right corner, with Parker's shot giving the Falcons a 73-63 lead.
• Brett's entry pass resulted in a Perry banker with three and a half minutes to go. BG's run was 8-0, and the Falcons' lead was 75-63.
• The Falcons got a pair of stops, and after the second, Hill was fouled and made each of the ensuing shots from the stripe. With just under two minutes to go, BG's lead was a game-high 14 points, and the lead remained in double digits the rest of the way.
