All-Program Reunion
Saturday's meet will be a reunion of former Falcons swimmers and divers, recognizing those who set a high standard throughout the history of the program. Banners from past state and conference championships are hanging above the pool. During the meet's break, announcements will be made to recognize program alumni and their accomplishments. Many of those accomplishments were achieved under the guidance of Dr. Jean Campbell, who coached BGSU swimming and diving team from 1966-1978.
About Jean Campbell
Former BGSU professor and swimming and diving coach Dr. Jean Bailey Campbell coached the Falcons from 1966-1978, leading them to five Ohio State Championships and two Midwest Championships. Under Dr. Campbell, Falcons swimmers and divers made 34 appearances at the AIAW Nationals, earning All-American honors 15 times. In 1978, Dr. Campbell led the synchronized swimming team to a sixth place finish at the AIAW Nationals.
From 1965-1978, Dr. Campbell taught numerous women's physical education courses at Bowling Green State University. She instructed students in swimming and diving, gymnastics, ice skating, water safety, and physical education. Her dissertation, titled An Approach to Human Movement for the Stage: The Scientific Bases of Efficient Movement and the Theoretical Bases of Expressive Movement, was published in 1976. Campbell obtained her Master of Arts in Theatre from BGSU in 1968. She obtained her Ph.D. in Theatre from BGSU in 1976.
Coach's Quotes
On the meet: "We want to continue the momentum we had after last weekend's meet against Ohio. The girls did really well, the team was very connected. This last week of training, we've increased in volume and intensity, but they've responded very well. I'm excited to see them swim longer events and see how our fitness is overall with a longer meet format. Marshall is good, I think it's going to be competitive. If we show up and compete and race like I know we can, I think we can leave here with a win.
On the program reunion: "It's a very special thing. This program's been around for almost 80 years. I'm not sure how many people realize that, but that is a long time for a program to be at a university. There have been a lot of championships. The men's teams have won six MAC championships, the women's teams have won eight championships at the state or MAC level. To have everybody back for this reunion to celebrate everything that was accomplished in the last 80 years is going to be so much fun. Hopefully it will reignite the spirit of our alumni and connect them with the current team."
