Falcons Take Two on Record-Setting Saturday
March 16, 2019 | Softball
BG beats SBU by 21 runs as 3 pitchers combine on a no-hitter
The Bowling Green State University softball team had a Saturday to remember, rolling up a total of 31 runs in a pair of wins at the Morehead State Classic. The Falcons scored a school-record 21 runs in the opener, and three pitchers combined on a no-hitter in a 21-0 win over St. Bonaventure.
Then, in the nightcap, the Brown and Orange pounded out 13 hits in a 10-4 win over host Morehead State.
BGSU had a total of 32 hits in the two games, and the Falcons hit .492 as a team. Junior Evelyn Loyola led the way, going 6-for-7 in the two wins. She had three hits in each game, including a pair of home runs in the SBU contest.
Fellow junior Madi McCoy also had six hits, going 6-for-9 at the plate. McCoy was 4-for-5 vs. the Bonnies and added two hits against the Eagles.
Loyola and McCoy combined to score seven runs and drive in 12.
Sophomore Sarah Gonzalez and senior Alex Sorgi each had four hits on Saturday, while seniors Kali Holcomb and Kellie Natham had three apiece.
Senior Meredith Miller started the SBU game and pitched three hitless innings, while sophomore Madison French and senior Kiley Sosby each worked an inning without allowing a hit.
NOTE OF THE DAY
• The Falcons' total of 21 runs, as mentioned, set a new single-game record. The old record was 19 runs, in a 19-3 victory over Defiance in 1981. A list of BGSU's top-scoring games can be found later in this recap.
• BGSU's 21-run margin of victory, obviously, is a new school record as well. The Falcons' most lopsided win prior to Saturday was a 17-0 victory over Wright State in May of 1990.
ADDITIONAL NOTE OF THE DAY
• Meredith Miller, Madison French and Kiley Sosby combined on a no-hitter vs. the Bonnies on Saturday. It marked BG's first no-no in over nine years, since Zada Lines held Dartmouth without a hit in a 3-0 Falcon win on March 5, 2010.
SPECIAL BONUS NOTE OF THE DAY
• BGSU had gone over three years without having a player homer twice in a game prior to Wednesday. Then, it happened twice in a three-game span.
• Senior Kellie Natham hit two round-trippers in Wednesday's opening game vs. Oakland. Then, on Saturday, Evelyn Loyola had her first multiple-homer game in the win over St. Bonaventure. Loyola had six RBi in the victory.
OK, MAYBE JUST ONE MORE NOTE OF THE DAY
• In the first four innings of the SBU game, the Falcons hit .727 (16-of-22) with runners on base, .786 (11-of-14) with runners in scoring position and .722 (13-of-18) with two outs.
BGSU-SBU – HOW IT HAPPENED
• In Saturday's opener, the Falcons used five consecutive two-out hits – including three doubles – to take the lead with a five-run second inning. Then, BG scored three times in the third inning.
• The fourth frame saw the Falcons send 16 batters to the plate, scoring 13 runs.
• SBU starter Rylee Hehir held the Falcons to just a Madi McCoy single in the first inning, and the Bonnies put runners at the corners in the bottom of the inning, on a pair of walks. But, BG starter Meredith Miller got out of the frame unscathed after a liner to sophomore Sarah Gonzalez at third.
• In the second inning, freshman Marissa Mullen walked with one down, but a Gonzalez grounder saw the lead runner retired for the second out. Gonzalez then stole second, however, and junior Evelyn Loyola became the first of five-straight Falcons to get a hit. Her single to left scored Gonzalez with what proved to be the only run the Falcons would need.
• Senior Kali Holcomb followed with a double, and classmate Alex Sorgi singled to score another run. Two Falcons crossed the plate when junior Taylor Blevins doubled to center, and a McCoy double plated Blevins with BG's fifth run.
• In the third, sophomore Nikki Sorgi drew a leadoff walk, and after Mullen's sacrifice bunt, Gonzalez and Loyola hit back-to-back homers.
• SBU changed pitchers, and Sam Wood retired the next two Falcons, but she would have no such luck the following inning.
• The epic fourth frame saw McCoy and senior Kellie Natham single, and a Nikki Sorgi grounder advanced the runners. Mullen singled to plate a pair, and Gonzalez followed with a double before Wood got a strikeout for the second out of the inning.
• Then, however, the next nine runners reached base, on five-straight singles, a walk, a double, another walk, and a grand slam.
• Holcomb singled to bring two teammates around to score, and Alex Sorgi's base hit scored Holcomb. Blevins, McCoy and junior Kendyl Wheeler all followed with singles, and a Nikki Sorgi walk loaded the bases. Freshman Sidney Cook's pinch-hit double scored McCoy and Wheeler, and after Gonzalez walked to reload the bases, Loyola unloaded them, greeting reliever Alyssa Yungwirth with a grand slam.
• Meanwhile, Miller worked three hitless innings before giving way to sophomore Madison French. French issued three walks in the bottom of the fourth before getting an inning-ending strikeout.
• In the fifth, senior Kiley Sosby came on to pitch. She hit two batters with pitches, but then got back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning and the game.
BGSU-SBU STATS & LEADERS
• BG pounded out 19 hits in the win. Six players had at least two hits apiece.
• McCoy was 4-for-5 with two runs and three RBI. Loyola went 3-for-4, scoring three runs and driving in six. Loyola homered two times, including a grand slam, while McCoy had one of BG's five doubles in the game.
• No fewer than eight Falcons had two or more RBI, while eight different BG players scored at least two runs.
• Gonzalez scored four runs, going 2-for-3 with a walk, a double and a home run.
• BG's three pitchers combined to allow seven walks and hit two batters with pitches, but the trio did not surrender a single hit.
• Hehir, the first of three SBU pitchers, took the loss, allowing eight runs and eight hits in 2 1/3 innings. Wood gave up 11 earned runs and 10 hits in 1 1/3 innings for the Bonnies.

BGSU-MSU – HOW IT HAPPENED
• Game two saw the Falcons take a three-run first-inning lead, before Morehead State tied the contest with two runs in the second and another in the fourth. But, the Brown and Orange then scored seven-straight runs over the next three innings to retake control of the game.
• The Eagles threatened in the top of the first, putting runners at the corners with one out via a hit-by-pitch and an infield error. But, BG starter Brooke Parker got back-to-back strikeouts to escape the jam.
• The BG bats got going right away in the bottom of the first. Alex Sorgi led off with a double, and after a sac bunt by sophomore Payton Hamm, McCoy's single produced the game's first run. Then, Natham homered to make it a three-run game. Loyola followed with a double, chasing starting pitcher Sara King, and reliever Randi Hamilton struck out the next two hitters.
• And, the Eagles cut into that BG lead immediately. A leadoff walk to Elizabeth Lindsey was followed by an Aubrey Bennett triple, and after Parker retired the next two hitters, Peyton Rose singled to plate Bennett.
• BG loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the second, on an Alex Sorgi single and back-to-back errors, but a popup ended the threat.
• In the fourth, the Eagles tied the game when Rose doubled with two outs, then came around to score on an infield error.
• But, Holcomb led off the BG fourth with a base hit, and with two down, Hamm's first collegiate homer gave BG the lead for good.
• The Falcons added to that 5-3 lead in the fifth. Natham doubled, and Loyola followed with a single that scored pinch-runner Blevins. After a pitching change, Gonzalez singled, and two batters later, a Holcomb grounder scored Loyola. Gonzalez came across the plate on a wild pitch, and BG's lead was 8-3
• In the BG sixth, Hamm walked, took second on a wild pitch and scored on McCoy's single. After a grounder resulted in a force play at second, Loyola walked, and Gonzalez singled to score Natham with the Falcons' 10th run.
• The Eagles got a run in the seventh on a Lindsey double, but it was too little, too late.
BGSU-MSU STATS & LEADERS
• BG had 13 hits in the win, with Loyola going a perfect 3-for-3 with a double. Four of her teammates had two hits apiece, including Natham, who had a double, a homer, two runs scored and two RBI.
• Natham was one of four Falcons who went 2-for-4 at the plate. That quartet also included Gonzalez, McCoy and Alex Sorgi. Sorgi had a double in the win.
• Hamm went 1-for-2 with a walk, a sac bunt and her first collegiate homer. She scored two runs and drove in a pair.
• Parker picked up the complete-game win, allowing three earned runs. She walked two batters and struck out six.
• Three MSU pitchers combined to allow 10 earned runs and 13 hits.
UP NEXT
• BGSU faces the same two opponents on Sunday (March 17). The Falcons meet SBU in a 10:00 a.m. first pitch, then face MSU at 3:00 p.m. to conclude play in the Morehead State Classic.
• Then, on Wednesday (March 20), the Orange and Brown will travel to Dayton for a pair of games. BG will face Dayton at 2:00 p.m. and Wright State at 7:00 pm, with both contests taking place at the WSU Softball Field.
