March 08, 2019 | Volleyball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball program and head coach Danijela Tomic have announced the signing of Yelianiz Torres to a National Letter of Intent. Torres, of Manati, Puerto Rico, will join the volleyball program as a freshman for the 2019-20 season.
"We are thrilled to welcome Yelianiz to BGSU and our volleyball program!" Tomic said. "She is a great addition who will make us better on and off the court. Yelianiz is an outstanding person, student and a volleyball player. Playing indoor and beach volleyball from an early age in Puerto Rico helped Yelianiz develop a high volleyball IQ and great skills which were evident to us the first time we saw her play. She is a 'baller' with all intangibles and character attributes for which we look in all of our players."
Torres has accumulated a plethora of awards while playing, both as an individual and as a team. She was named the 2015 Tasis Dorado MVP, the 2015 Dorado Academy MVP and the 2018 Christian Military Academy MVP. She was also on the teams that won the 2014, 2016 and 2018 Puerto Rico National Cup, the 2016 Primera Hora Champions, the 2016 La Onda Deportiva Champions and the 2016 El Nuevo Dia Champions.
Torres also played club volleyball with the Vaqueras, Lady's Knights, earning another handful awards. Those honors include seven championships, two all-star selections and five MVP awards.
When asked about the biggest influence in her life, Torres reflected on the support her parents have provided.
"My parents, they are always supporting me in sport and school," said Torres. "They taught me to never give up on my dreams."
Torres, the daughter of Keven Torres and Yajaira Colon, plans to study psychology at Bowling Green.
"I chose BGSU because I was searching for a school with a great academic and athletic program and BGSU offered me that," said Torres. "I really liked the university's campus and volleyball team, since the beginning of the process the coaches and teammates were very kind to me and that was something really important to me."
