Tue., Apr. 30Â Â CLEVELAND STATE (DH)Â Â 3:00 p.m.
Sat, May 4Â Â Â Â at Kent State (DH)Â Â Â 1:00 p.m.
SETTING THE SCENE
• The Bowling Green State University softball team concludes the home schedule on Tuesday afternoon (April 30), as head coach Sarah Willis and the Falcons face Cleveland State University in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Meserve Field, and admission is free.
• Then, the Brown and Orange will wrap up the 2019 regular-season slate with a Saturday (May 4) twinbill on the road against Kent State University. Saturday's first game is slated for 1:00 p.m. at the Diamond at Dix.
TOUCH 'EM ALL (FOUR FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT THE FALCONS)
• Junior Madi McCoy's hard-hit ground ball plated freshman Madeline Dyer in the bottom of the 10th inning, giving the Falcons a 3-2 win over Akron in the opening game of Saturday's (April 27) doubleheader at Meserve. The game was BG's longest, in terms of innings played, in over three years, and was the Falcons' longest MAC contest in more than five years.
• Senior Alex Sorgi stole four bases in the second game of Saturday's twinbill, tying the BGSU single-game record. She twice got on base and proceeded to steal both second and third.
• Sorgi leads the MAC and is ranked 28th in the nation in stolen bases this season.
• Senior Meredith Miller is fourth in the conference and 41st in the nation in strikeouts, with a total of 171.
THANKS, SENIORS
• Saturday was Senior Day at Meserve Field, with the seniors in the BGSU softball program recognized in ceremonies prior to the opening game. That seven-member senior class includes Kali Holcomb, Meredith Miller, Kellie Natham, Brooke Parker, Kathleen Shier, Alex Sorgi and Kiley Sosby.
• All seven seniors saw action in at least one of Saturday's games.
A FAMILIAR FACE IN THE FIRST-BASE DUGOUT
• Amy Kyler is in her first season as head coach at Cleveland State. Kyler, the top pitcher in CSU history, spent three seasons on the BGSU staff, as she was an assistant coach under Leigh Ross from 1998-2001.
• The Falcons finished 21-27 overall in 1999, Kyler's first season on staff, then went a combined 68-37 in the next two seasons, tying for the MAC's East Division title in 2000 and winning the division outright in 2001. BG was 47-23 in conference games during those three seasons.
A FEW MORE BG NOTES FOR YOUR BROADCAST, BLOG OR MYSPACE PAGE
• Senior Alex Sorgi, as mentioned, tied the school record – a record she already shared – with four stolen bases in Saturday's second game vs. Akron. Sorgi also had four steals in a win over Mississippi Valley State last season (March 9, 2018).
• Single-game records are incomplete, but this much is known: no Falcon has ever stolen five bases in a game. Sorgi and Molly Holliday (April 2, 2015, vs. the school then known as IPFW) are the only two BGSU players with four steals in a game since 1994.
• Sorgi now has 29 stolen bases this season, the highest total by a Falcon in over 20 years. She leads the MAC, and is tied for third on that BG single-season list with Jenny Ranz (1997). Only BGSU Hall-of-Famer Amy Lienhardt has stolen more bases in a season. Lienhardt stole 34 bases in 1987, then shattered her own school record with 53 steals in 1988.
• Sorgi has a career total of 72 stolen bases, heading into Tuesday's CSU doubleheader. She is second in school history on that list, trailing only Lienhardt (121 steals from 1985-88).
• Prior to Saturday's opener, the Falcons had not played a 10-inning game in over three years. BGSU and Michigan State went 10 innings on March 19, 2016, in a wild game won by the Spartans, 20-13.
• The Falcons' last MAC game to require a double-digit amount of innings came on April 6, 2014, when BGSU picked up a 9-5 win at Miami.
• Senior Meredith Miller had nine strikeouts, without walking or hitting a batter, in her 10-inning, complete-game win over Akron on Saturday. Miller now has 171 strikeouts this season, the fourth-highest total in program history. BG Hall-of-Famer Liz Vrabel owns the record, with 237 K's in the 2005 season.
• Miller, in just her third year with the Falcons, now has 440 strikeouts, ranking fifth on that BGSU career list.
• Tuesday's CSU double-dip will conclude the home schedule for the Falcons. BGSU is currently 7-6 at Meserve Field this season, and the Falcons are batting .287 as a team.
• Junior Taylor Blevins leads BGSU with a .405 batting average in home games this spring, while seniors Alex Sorgi and Kellie Natham are hitting .356 and .308, respectively. Sorgi has team-high totals of 11 runs and 16 hits at home, while Natham paces the Brown and Orange with three homers and 12 RBI at Meserve Field in '19.
THE OPPONENT
• Cleveland State is 14-31 on the year, and the Vikings are 7-14 in Horizon League play after capturing two of three games vs. Wright State over the weekend.
• Kelly Hysong and Riley Ries are hitting .325 and .321, respectively. Hysong has 11 of CSU's 20 homers, and she and Ries have combined for 52 of the team's 124 RBI.
• In the circle, Hysong is 8-11 with a team-low 3.65 ERA, while Hanna Griffin is 6-16 with a 4.46 ERA. Hysong and Griffin have started a total of 41 of the team's 45 games.
• Amy Kyler, the top pitcher in CSU history, is in her first year as head coach of her alma mater after 11 years at Notre Dame College. Kyler, as mentioned, was an assistant coach under Leigh Ross at BGSU for three seasons.
• CSU finished the 2018 season with a 15-34 overall mark and a 5-17 league ledger.
THE SERIES
• The Falcons lead Cleveland State, 21-8, in the all-time series between the teams, and BG has won two-straight games, including a 10-3 victory at the CSU Dome Tournament last February. CSU has not visited Meserve Field since the 2004 season. The Falcons are 11-3 at home and 10-5 on the road vs. the Vikings over the years.
UP NEXT
• Following the CSU doubleheader, BGSU concludes the 2019 campaign next Saturday (May 4), heading to Northeast Ohio for a doubleheader vs. Kent State.
