Five Things To Know As Regionals Begin Thursday In Jacksonville
May 22, 2019 | Women's Track and Field
Jacksonville, Fla. – Four members of the Bowling Green State University outdoor track and field team will begin regional competition Thursday at Hodges Stadium, on the campus of the University of North Florida. The Falcons will compete in six events across three days. Here are five things to know as you follow the Falcons:
PEDIGREE OF SUCCESS
There may not be a coach in the country who has gotten more out of his or her student-athletes at NCAA Regional competition than BGSU Head Coach Lou Snelling. Since 2013, the Falcons have competed at regionals 26 times under Snelling and have equaled or exceeded their projected seed 23 teams – a remarkable rate of 88 percent. When Falcon student-athletes have been a top 12 seed, they are a perfect 5-for-5 in qualifying for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field National Championships.

BREAKING DOWN BGSU'S REGIONAL QUALIFIERS
SCHEDULE
Three of the four qualifiers for NCAA regionals will be making their first appearance at the meet and all three have eligibility remaining in their careers. Junior Chasatea Brown is just the second Falcon to qualify for regionals in the 400 hurdles, doing so by breaking the 60-second barrier in the finals of the MAC Championships. Redshirt sophomore Kaila Butler is seeded No. 11 in the hammer throw and has been ranked among the top 20 nationally in the event all year. Redshirt freshman Zaresha Neal will compete in two events – the shot put and discus.
THE VETERAN READY FOR ONE LAST HURRAH
Redshirt senior Aliyah Gustafson enters competition as the No. 4 seed in the shot put and has as much experience as anyone in the field. A two-time NCAA outdoor national championship qualifier, Gustafson placed seventh nationally in the shot put during indoor season and has finished as high as 15th at the outdoor national championships (in 2018). She will make her fourth consecutive regional appearance this week and, after taking part in the hammer and discus, will have competed seven times in her career at a regional.
FALCONS WITH AN EYE ON NATIONALS
Aliyah Gustafson and Kaila Butler are each seeded within the top 12 heading into the weekend, positioning themselves for an opportunity to qualify for nationals. Gustafson is the No. 4 seed in the shot put and has twice in her career advanced through regionals. Butler is making her regional debut as a redshirt sophomore and is the No. 11 seed in the hammer throw. She has come up big in the clutch this year, winning the MAC Championship in the event by more than 12 feet.
FOUR SCORE
Aliyah Gustafson has become just the third Falcon, and only the second under the current two-region system, to qualify for the regional meet four times in her career, joining Makenzie Wheat (2014-17) and Takarra Dunning (2006-09). Wheat and Gustafson overlapped, competing side-by-side in both 2016 and 2017.
