Falcons To Return Home Friday To Face Youngstown State
January 22, 2020 | Women's Tennis
Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University tennis program will return to Perrysburg Tennis Center this Friday (Jan. 24) to begin their home slate for the spring. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. and will be the first of eight home matches for the Falcons during the spring portion of their schedule. In the match, Bowling Green will host Youngstown State, who they last faced during the 2017-18 season in a match that the Orange and Brown won by a score of 6-1.
Last Time Out
This past Sunday (Jan. 19) the Falcons kicked off the spring portion of their schedule, taking on Notre Dame in a doubleheader format with the first match taking place at 10 a.m. and the second at 4 p.m. in South Bend. The Fighting Irish came away with the win in both matches, dropping Bowling Green to an 0-2 start. In singles play, Yulia Kapitanova picked up a win in No. 3 singles over Bess Waldram during the first match. As for doubles, Marharita-Sophia Tavpash and Marta Bettinelli claimed a win during the second match. Also during the second match, Tavpash was leading her No. 1 singles match, but the match was deemed unfinished as Notre Dame claimed the win.Â
Preparing For The Penguins
Friday's match against the Falcons will be Youngstown State's first of the spring with the Penguins heading north to Toledo on Saturday. A year ago, the Penguins finished the season with a 6-18 standing overall while being 3-6 in their conference. During the season, Youngstown State faced three MAC teams, being Ball State, Toledo and Akron, going 0-3 against them. Of those matches, the one against the Rockets was the closest as the Penguins lost by just one point in a 4-3 final.Â
Checking The Record Book
After picking up a doubles win against Notre Dame, Tavpash climbed to 13th on the all-time career doubles win list with 72. If she can capture another on Friday, it will move her into a five-way tie for ninth all-time. Tavpash also moved up the all-time combined wins list, having now registered 123 wins over her career in the Orange and Brown, tying her for 23rd all-time. With two wins on the line this weekend, she could move as high as sole possession of 22nd. In singles, Tavpash is currently 27th with 51 career singles wins. Fellow senior Ayumi Sasaki is also nearing the record book for career singles wins, needing just one more to enter into a three-way tie for 30th all-time.Â
