THE HISTORY
BGSU is 28-17-1 all-time against Western Michigan and the Falcons posted a 195.325 at home a year ago to defeat the Broncos. The last time these two teams squared off in Kalamazoo, BGSU came up just short with an impressive 195.500 score in 2018, while the Broncos recorded a 195.675. Bowling Green's last win over WMU in Michigan came in 2014.
EAST, MARION SEND EARLY SEASON STATEMENTS
Jovannah East and Samantha Marion made early statements with exceptional performances to open the 2020 season against Eastern Michigan. For the efforts, East was named the MAC Gymnast of the Week and Marion was the MAC Specialist of the Week.
East earned her fifth career MAC Gymnast of the Week honor with a 49.300 all-around score, which ranks 16th nationally. She won the all-around title against Eastern Michigan and earned victories in two other events.
Marion, who has missed her first two years due to injuries, debuted with stunning precision, winning the balance beam (9.875) and placing second on vault (9.825) behind only East.Â
IT'S BEEN A WHILE
Redshirt freshman Tess Muir made her return to the lineup against Eastern Michigan. Muir competed on vault, beam and floor a year ago until an injury ended her season after just four meets. She took to the balance beam against EMU and posted a personal best score of 9.775. A year ago, her best score on beam was 9.625 through the first four meets.
Junior Alex Fochler missed the entire 2019 season after performing on uneven bars in 2018. She returned to the lineup this year. After a slow start against Eastern Michigan, she earned medalist honors in back-to-back meets at Rutgers and at Ball State. She recorded scores of 9.850 and 9.800 in those two contests.
Redshirt sophomore Samantha Marion earned MAC Specialist Of The Week honors following her performance at Eastern Michigan and she has competed on beam and vault in each of the first three meets. Marion had not competed in her first two years at Bowling Green due to injuries.
NEVER TOO EARLY
While the season is just three weeks old, a handful of Falcons are already making larger impacts than they previously have.
Junior Alex Fochler scored a 9.550 on floor Sunday at Ball State. It is the first time she has competed on floor in her collegiate career.
Sophomore Katelyn Goldstrom competed in just one rotation a year ago, but is taking part in three this year. Her vault score has improved in each meet, capping with a 9.800 during the past weekend. She has also improved her average on bars to a 9.475 this year, after scoring a 9.150 a year ago. Finally, she has recorded at least a 9.400 on floor in each meet this year.
Junior Elena Lawson competed in the all-around against Eastern Michigan for the first time in her career. A year ago, she was involved in three rotations (all but balance beam) and two years ago, she only competed on vault. So far in 2020, she is averaging a 9.800 on floor, an improvement over her average of 9.627 last year.
OFF TO A GOOD START
A year ago, Bowling Green struggled out of the gate, scoring 189.675 in a quad meet at Alabama. But the Falcons had a much better start this year, recording a 193.325 team score against Eastern Michigan. Although BGSU lost the dual meet, it was the team's second-best score to start a season over the past five years.
EAST'S OUTSTANDING ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Jovannah East will go down as one of the greatest gymnasts in BGSU history. Just the second gymnast to qualify for the NCAA National Championships, East has put together a remarkable career through her first 3+ years. East's career accomplishments include the following:
Three-time First Team All-MAC (2017, 2018, 2019)
Two-time Academic All-MAC (2018, 2019)
MAC Vault Co-Champion (2018)
MAC Beam Co-Champion (2019)
MAC All-Tournament Team (2017, 2018, 2019)
