Falcons Ground Eagles in 15-Point Road Win
December 19, 2020 | Women's Basketball
Hempfling has first-half double-double to stake BG to an early lead
MOREHEAD, Ky. – Junior Kadie Hempfling had a double-double in the first half, staking the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team to an early lead, and the Falcons went on to post a 76-61 win over Morehead State University Saturday afternoon (Dec. 19). The game, BGSU's final non-conference matchup of the 2020-21 season, was held at Johnson Arena.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 5-1, while dropping the Eagles to 1-5 on the season.
Freshman Lexi Fleming had a game-high 18 points to pace five Falcons in double figures. Hempfling wound up with 13 points and a team-leading 11 rebounds, while sophomore Elissa Brett had 11 points in the win.
Freshman Nyla Hampton, making her collegiate debut, hit a three-point field goal just over a minute after checking into the game for the first time, and finished with 11 points. Hampton also had a BG-best four assists and four steals in 23 minutes of action.
Senior Angela Perry rounded out BG's double-digit scoring brigade with 10 points. Perry was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.
Ariel Kirkwood had 17 points and 16 rebounds for the Eagles, while Gabby Crawford had 15 points and 10 boards. The duo combined for over 50 percent of MSU's points and rebounds.
Â
NOTE OF THE DAY
• Freshman Lexi Fleming, as mentioned, scored a game-high 18 points on Saturday afternoon. Fleming has now scored in double digits in each of her first six games.
• This marks the third consecutive season, but only the ninth time since 1993, that a BGSU player has scored in double figures in each of the first six games of the season. Fleming is just the second freshman to do so in that time.
BGSU shot an even 40 percent from the field for the game, but held MSU to just a 32.2% success rate. The Falcons forced the Eagles into 22 turnovers and had a 17-8 advantage in points off turnovers. BGSU also had 17 fast-break points to the hosts' two.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"I loved the way we competed today. It was a game of different runs and I'm so proud of the way we continued to respond. We got many positive contributions from many different players today, which was great to see."
FIRST QUARTER
• The Falcons scored the game's first points, as senior Angela Perry hit a turnaround shot on the game's first possession, and freshman Kenzie Lewis followed with a driving layup.
• MSU's first point came on a free throw with 2:20 gone, but that began a 5-0 run for the hosts, as Tomiyah Alford's layup was followed by two Ariel Kirkwood free throws.
• The Eagles' lone lead of the day would last for just 20 seconds, however, as freshman Lexi Fleming found sophomore Elissa Brett for a left-wing three-pointer that began a 7-0 run. Fleming drove through a trio of would-be defenders for a layup, and after a Lewis defensive rebound, Brett ran the floor, took a long pass from the freshman, and was fouled. Brett's free throws gave the visitors an 11-5 advantage at the day's first media timeout.
• Brett's charity tosses were the first and second of seven-straight points that came at the free-throw line. BG scored six of those seven points, and when Fleming knocked down a three-point try, the Falcons had a double-digit lead, at 17-7.
• MSU got a Kirkwood layup, but Perry hit four-straight shots from the stripe, and the Falcons had a 21-9 lead. Gabby Crawford converted a three-point play, but freshman Nyla Hampton – just over a minute after checking into the first game of her BGSU career – took a Fleming feed and knocked down a three-pointer. Kirkwood's putback in the final seconds made it a 24-14 game after 10 minutes.
• The teams were whistled for a combined 14 fouls in the first quarter, with BGSU going 9-of-10 and MSU 6-for-9 at the free-throw line.
SECOND QUARTER
• Junior Kadie Hempfling drained a three-point try on the opening possession of the quarter, but MSU scored the next four points to briefly cut BG's lead to single digits. Brett responded with an elbow jumper, and after nearly two minutes of scoreless action, Hampton's sweet driving jumper made it a 31-18 game with 5:37 left before halftime.
• Moments later, Hempfling's long three-pointer gave BGSU a 14-point advantage, and the junior took a Hampton pass and hit another shot from beyond the arc. Hampton immediately picked the pocket of Lai'Janique Perry-Ellis and sailed in for a layup and a 39-20 lead, the largest of the game. BG took a 16-point lead into the intermission.
THIRD QUARTER
• The BGSU lead fluctuated between 15 and 17 points for the first five minutes of the second half, before MSU made a small run.
• Brett hit a foul-line jumper, and Lewis stepped through several Eagle defenders for a layup with just over two minutes gone. Hempfling blew past a Morehead State foe for a layup, and a Lewis free throw put the BG lead at 16 points.
• But, a Kirkwood putback was followed by a Jazzmyn Elston three-pointer, and when Crawford hit a jumper, the BG lead was just eight points, 48-40, with 2:25 left in the quarter.
• Quickly, however, BG bounced back. Hempfling found senior Madison Parker in front of the Falcons' bench, and Parker's three-point try found nothing but net. Then, Fleming stole the ball from Morgan Defoor and sailed in for an and-one layup, and when Brett took Parker's pass and hit a pull-up jumper, BG had a quick 8-0 run and a 56-40 lead. The lead was at 14 points after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Hampton went the length of the floor and hit a short jumper early in the quarter, and Fleming got a layup to go moments later. But, the hosts were answering at the other end, and when Ellie Jo Johnson made a pair of free throws at the 7:39 mark, the Eagles were within nine.
• Parker took a Hampton pass and hit another three-ball, but Kirkwood's three-point play made it a single-digit game once more (but only once more). A Hampton steal led to a Fleming finish, and then Fleming hit another layup in transition. After Fleming came up with a steal, she finished her own personal 7-0 run by knocking down a three-point attempt from the left side, giving the Brown and Orange a 71-55 lead midway through the period.
• BG held MSU to just six points over the game's final seven minutes, and a Hampton layup and a Perry short-corner jumper kept the Falcons' lead at a comfortable margin down the stretch.
STATS, NOTES & NUMBERS
• The Falcons led for 39:20 of the game's 40 minutes.
• BGSU shot an even 40 percent from the field, going 26-of-65, while holding MSU to a 32.2% (19-of-59) success rate.
• The Eagles were 4-of-9 from three-point land, while BGSU hit nine long-range buckets in 31 tries.
• The Falcons went 15-of-19 from the free-throw line, with senior Angela Perry a perfect 6-for-6, while MSU was 19-of-26 at the stripe.
• The teams combined for 47 fouls in the game.
• Junior Kadie Hempfling had a double-double in the first half alone, with 11 points and 11 rebounds before the break.
• Freshman Nyla Hampton, as mentioned, made her collegiate debut, and had her first double-digit scoring game as a Falcon. Hampton was 5-for-9 from the floor and added a team-leading four assists along with four steals.
• Fellow freshman Lexi Fleming led all players with five steals, as BG had 12 as a team. The Falcons had a 17-8 lead in points off turnovers.
• Fleming had 13 of her game-high 18 points in the second half, including her own personal 7-0 run midway through the fourth quarter. She had 10 points in that fourth period.
• In addition to BG's quintet of double-figure scorers, the Falcons got seven points from Madison Parker and six from Kenzie Lewis. Lewis was a perfect 2-for-2 from the field and added nine rebounds and three assists.
• Lewis and sophomore Elissa Brett tied for game honors with plus/minus ratings of +17, while Fleming finished the day at +16.
• In addition to Hampton, freshman Sophie Dziekan made her BGSU debut in Saturday's win.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons return home and return to Mid-American Conference action on Tuesday (Dec. 22), when Miami comes to the Stroh Center. That game is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start.
• The MU matchup is BGSU's final game of the month of December. The Falcons' next scheduled contest is at Ball State on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2021.
