Perry's Deadly Shooting Not Enough as Falcons Fall
February 01, 2020 | Women's Basketball
Miami stops BG, 80-59, on Saturday at the Stroh
Junior Angela Perry hit 10 of her 12 shots from the floor and tied for game scoring honors, but it was not enough as Bowling Green fell to Miami University, 80-59, on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 1). The Mid-American Conference East Division matchup was held at the Stroh Center.
Perry had 23 points on the day, but was the only player in double digits for the Falcons. The RedHawks, by contrast, saw four players reach double figures, led by Peyton Scott with 23.
Lauren Dickerson added 18 points, while Savannah Kluesner and Abbey Hoff scored 13 and 11 points, respectively, for the visitors.
BGSU weathered an early run by the visitors, and the Falcons ended the first quarter on a 14-4 run to take a three-point lead after 10 minutes.
In the second quarter, a layup by freshman Kaillie Hall gave the home team a 26-21 lead, but the RedHawks then went on a 15-0 run to take the lead for good.
PERRY PRODUCTIVE IN THE POST
• Junior Angela Perry entered the game ranked 17th in the nation (and first in the MAC) in field-goal percentage, and she continued her successful shooting on Saturday. Perry made 10 of her 12 shots from the floor, including 10-of-11 from inside the arc, en route to 23 points.
• For Perry, Saturday marked the 11th game of 20 or more points in her career, and eight of those 11 games have come this season.
PARK FROM THE ARC
• Fellow junior Madisen Parker entered Saturday's game ranked fifth or better in the country in three three-point shooting categories, and she connected twice from the arc against the RedHawks. Parker has made a team-leading 70 three-pointers this year to date, and – with at least 11 games remaining in BGSU's season – has moved into a tied for 10th place on the BGSU single-season list.
• Parker is 22 successful triples shy of tying the BG single-season record, held by Lauren Prochaska (2009-10).
• The Fort Wayne, Ind., native has made at least one triple in each of this season's 20 games. She now has 115 career treys, and has moved into 17th place on the BGSU career list.
FIRST-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• The RedHawks broke out to a 9-2 lead, with Kluesner scoring the first and last buckets in that stretch, and the Falcons used an early timeout.
• Sophomore Kadie Hempfling connected on a sweet reverse layup, but Scott came back with a quick bucket.
• Then, however, Hempfling's three-point play was followed by Parker's long-distance shot, putting BG within a point. Senior Clare Glowniak's turnaround one-hander made it an 8-0 run and a 12-11 BG lead.
• The teams traded buckets before Perry ended the period with four-straight points. Number 55 hit two free throws with 55.5 seconds on the clock to give the hosts an 18-15 lead.
SECOND-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• Junior Mari Hill's driving layup opened the second-period scoring, and after Scott hit back-to-back buckets, Hill found freshman Elissa Brett for a reverse layup, and Perry threw in a shot from a tough angle for a 24-19 lead.
• Moments later, Hill grabbed a defensive rebound and quickly fired a pass ahead to freshman Kaillie Hall for a transition layup and a 26-21 lead.
• But, after that bucket, the RedHawks would score the next 15 points. BG was held scoreless for over six minutes, before Perry converted in the final seconds of the half.
• Dickerson scored seven of the visitors' 15 points during that run, capped by a three-pointer that made it a 36-26 Miami lead in the final minute of the period.
• Perry took a Hempfling pass and converted with six seconds left, putting BG within eight points at the intermission.
THIRD-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• The Falcons slowly whittled away at the Miami lead, cutting the margin to four points. After Dickerson's three-pointer gave the 'Hawks an 11-point advantage, the Falcons went on a 9-2 run, with Parker's left-wing triple making it a 43-39 game with 6:31 left in the period.
• But, Scott answered with a three-pointer of her own, and the visitors extended the lead back out to double digits. Fourth-year Falcon Caterrion Thompson's jumper with five seconds to go cut the MU lead to 54-44 after 30 minutes.
FOURTH-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• Hempfling fed Perry for a layup on the opening possession of the quarter, and BG forced a Miami airball on the next possession. But, the shot went directly to Scott, who put it back up and in for a 10-point MU lead.
• After Brett split a pair of free throws, Kluesner's three-point play began an 8-2 run that gave the RedHawks a 15-point lead, 64-49, with just over eight minutes to go.
• Perry scored off of a lob from freshman Olivia Trice, and moments later, Trice's offensive rebound and left-side jumper cut the BG deficit to 13 points with just over six minutes remaining. But, Kluesner answered with a jumper, and after a BG turnover, Scott's three-pointer gave the visitors an 18-point advantage. BG could not cut into the deficit over the remaining four minutes.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
• Miami shot 51.6% from the floor, making 33 shots in 64 attempts. The Falcons went 24-of-55 (43.6%) from the field on the day.
• BGSU was held to a season-low two three-point field goals made, going 2-of-14 from long range. The RedHawks went 7-for-25 from the arc.
• BG hit 9-of-15 free-throw attempts for a 60% success rate, while MU was just 7-for-14 (50%).

• The Falcons, paced by Perry, had a 42-34 edge in points in the paint, and BG got 15 points off the bench to Miami's 10.
