Eagles Leave the Stroh with 70-58 Win
February 12, 2020 | Women's Basketball
Perry is 7-for-8 from the field to pace four twin-figure scorers
A third-quarter run, combined with a relentless rebounding effort, lifted Eastern Michigan to a 70-58 victory over the Bowling Green women's basketball team on Wednesday evening (Feb. 12). The Mid-American Conference matchup was held inside the Stroh Center.
Junior Angela Perry, the MAC leader in field-goal percentage, went 7-for-8 from the floor en route to a team-high 18 points. Perry paced a quartet of double-figure scorers that also included junior Mari Hill (12), sophomore Kadie Hempfling (10) and freshman Elissa Brett (10).

But, Jenna Annecchiarico and Areanna Combs combined for 42 points for the Eagles. Annecchiarico had a game-high 22 points, including 10 in the first quarter and 15 by halftime.
Combs scored 20 points, with 10 of those coming in the fourth quarter. She was 6-of-10 from the free-throw line in the final period.
Sophomore Morgan McMillen's three-point field goal in the final minute of the half gave the Falcons a 32-30 lead at the break. And, early in the third quarter, BG got two Perry free throws and a Hempfling layup to take a four-point lead at 36-32. But, the Eagles then proceeded to go on a 17-2 run. Courtnie Lewis made two of her four three-pointers (she tied Annecchiarico for game honors in that category), with her second triple in that sequence giving the visitors a 49-38 lead late in the period.
BG scored the next five points – with Perry scoring all five – to cut the deficit to six points in the first minute of the fourth quarter. And, after another Perry bucket, the EMU lead was down to seven points with 7:23 to go. But, a Combs layup began a quick four-point run that moved the lead back into double figures. BG got as close as eight points with under a minute remaining, but could draw no closer.
BG shot 43 percent from the floor while holding the visitors to 38.5%. But, the Eagles had a 49-27 rebounding advantage, and Eastern pulled down 20 offensive boards on the night. EMU had a 13-0 lead in second-chance points in a 12-point win.
FIRST-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• The Falcons shot 60% from the floor in the opening quarter, going 9-for-15 from the field. EMU shot an even 50% in the first 10 minutes of the game.
• Believe it or not, the first whistle of the game came with 1:38 left in the quarter. The first 8:22 of the contest featured no stoppages whatsoever, with no fouls and no turnovers by either team until Annecchiarico threw the ball away at that 1:38 mark.
• BG spotted the visitors a bucket, then scored the next six points, as Hill's back-door layup was followed by hoops by Perry and Brett.
• The Falcons led by an 8-4 count before EMU connected from beyond the arc. on three-straight possessions. Annecchiarico hit two of those triples, with her second giving the Eagles a 13-8 advantage.
• Hill answered with a right-side trey, and junior Madisen Parker knocked down a triple try moments later. Brett, who had assisted Parker on that shot, converted a layup, and Hill's driving layup capped a 7-0 run and gave BG a 20-17 lead. Eastern's Juanita Agosto ended the first-quarter scoring with a bucket.
SECOND-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• EMU scored the first four points of the second period to forge back ahead, but BG answered each Eastern bucket to stay within striking distance. Perry scored inside, Brett answered another Annecchiarico triple with a quick layup, and Hill followed a Combs layup with a pull-up jumper, making it a 28-26 game.
• Senior Clare Glowniak worked inside for a shot off glass and a 29-28 lead, and after EMU answered with a hoop, Glowniak fed McMillen for a right-side trey with 18.0 seconds left in the half. BG got as top to take that 32-30 lead into the break.
THIRD-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• Combs hit a jumper to open the second-half scoring, but two Perry free throws restored BG's two-point lead, and Hempfling backed her defender down and scored inside for a 36-32 advantage.
• But, Annecchiarico's step-back three began the Eagles' 17-2 run, which continued when Combs grabbed a defensive rebound, headed upcourt and laid the ball off to Lewis for a trailing three.
• Hill scored in the paint, but Eastern responded by scoring 11-straight points. Autumn Hudson's layup after a pair of offensive boards by the visitors made it a 46-38 game, and Lewis hit a long-distance shot at the 2:22 mark, giving EMU a 49-38 lead.
• Perry's free throw snapped a BG scoreless drought of nearly five minutes, and the junior's bucket with just three seconds left in the quarter stopped a streak of over six minutes without a field goal for the hosts. Despite those struggles, the Falcons trailed by just eight points.
FOURTH-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• And, the deficit quickly became just six points as, after an EMU turnover, Perry scored again to cap her own personal 5-0 run. BG forced a miss by Combs, with BG rebounding. But, Annecchiarico picked a Falcons' pocket at the other end of the floor, and Corrione Cardwell's hoop gave the visitors a 51-43 lead.
• Then, Lewis knocked down a corner three for an 11-point lead. BG countered with Brett's mid-range jumper, and after Perry blocked an EMU shot, Parker threw the ball inside to the junior center for a bucket that cut the Falcons' deficit to seven, 54-47.
• But, BG could get no closer. Combs hit a layup with 6:27 to go, and Hudson made a pair of free throws roughly 45 seconds later. Both teams went over a minute without scoring, but after a Perry free throw, Combs made another layup for a 60-47 lead with just 3:11 to play.
• The Falcons fouled to send the Eagles to the line for much of the remainder of the game. Brett scored inside, and Hempfling knocked down a three-point try with 1:23 to go. BG fouled Agosto, who missed both free-throw tries, but Combs came up with the rebound after the second miss, and she split a pair at the stripe after BG fouled her.
• Hempfling hit another triple, and the sophomore made a pair of charity tosses in the final minute, but EMU made enough free throws to keep the game from getting too close.
