Five-Run First Lifts Falcons Past Chattanooga
February 15, 2020 | Softball
BGSU earns a split on day two of season
After being blanked in game one, the Bowling Green softball team exploded for a five-run first inning in Saturday's (Feb. 15) second game of the day, and the Falcons went on to a 7-5 win over Chattanooga. The win was part of day-two action at the Chattanooga Challenge.
In the opener, BG (now 2-2 on the year) was downed by Lipscomb, 6-0.
Senior Madi McCoy had four hits on the day, including three in the second game, and freshman Payton Gottshall picked up the win vs. the Mocs with six innings of two-run, four-hit relief work.
Gottshall threw a total of 10 innings on the day. After striking out 17 batters in a complete-game, one-hit win over Tennessee Tech on Friday, Gottshall worked the first four innings of Saturday's opener vs. Lipscomb. She allowed two runs and three hits against the Bisons, walking three and striking out five.
QUOTING COACH WILLIS
"It was good to see the team finish on a high note with the win against a strong Chattanooga team. Our offense jumped early and set the tone for the game. There was a lot of support through out the entire lineup and it was good to see our offense put consistent pressure on the defense. It was a good team win for the program."
BGSU-LIPSCOMB – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Bisons got on the board in the bottom of the first, on a walk, a sacrifice bunt and a fielder's choice. Lipscomb had runners at the corners with one out before Gottshall struck out the next two batters to avoid further damage.
• In the third, however, another leadoff walk resulted in another run, as a two-out double by Lipscomb pitcher Katie Turner plated Alana Collins.
• The Bisons got another run in the fifth off of freshman reliever Sydney Stepp. After a leadoff single by Collins, a fielder's choice resulted in the first out of the inning, but an error on the throw put a runner in scoring position. Then, a single by Kamrie Rich plated Lipscomb's third run of the day.
• The Bisons doubled the lead with a three-run sixth, with three hits and a pair of BG errors in the inning.
• Meanwhile, Turner allowed just three hits in a complete-game win. She struck out seven Falcons while walking two.
• BG's hits included a single by senior Taylor Blevins to begin the game, a one-out hit by McCoy in the second and a two-out single by junior Sarah Gonzalez in the fifth.
• Blevins got as far as third base in the top of the first, on a Greta L'Esperance sac bunt and a passed ball, but was stranded there. McCoy advanced to second on a Sammy Dees sacrifice in the second, but got no further.
• BG put one more runner in scoring position, as Blevins advanced to second on a sixth-inning error. But, Turner got two strikeouts and a grounder back to the circle.
• Collins was 2-for-2 and Caitlin Turner 2-of-3 to pace Lipscomb's eight-hit attack.
BGSU-CHATTANOOGA – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The BG bats came alive quickly in Saturday's second game. Blevins led off the game with an infield hit, and McCoy's one-out double put two runners in scoring position. Everyone was safe on junior Nikki Sorgi's fielder's-choice grounder to the left side, as Blevins beat the throw home with a nifty hook slide, and the Falcons had the lead for good.
• Dees walked to load the bases, and junior Payton Hamm finished a nine-pitch at-bat by hitting a grounder to the right side. Hamm fouled off four pitches, including three-straight, before her run-scoring groundout.
• Senior Logan Everett followed with a two-run single that brought Sorgi and Dees home, and Everett scored herself on a double to the gap in right-center by senior Evelyn Loyola.
• The Mocs answered in the bottom of the frame. Emily Coltharp worked BG starter Hannah Davies for a walk, and another base on balls put two runners aboard. Morgan Kazerooni's two-out homer made it a 5-3 game before Davies got an inning-ending strikeout.
• A leadoff double in the Chattanooga second brought Gottshall into the game. She got a pair of infield popups, and after a two-out walk, the Falcon freshman struck out Reagan Armour to retire the side.
• In the BG third, Everett singled with two down, and Loyola reached on an error, but UTC starter Hannah Wood got a fly ball to right to end the threat.
• A single and a bunt put a Chattanooga runner at second with one out in the home half of the third, but Gottshall needed just seven total pitches to strike out the next two batters.
• In the fourth, BG added to the lead. Blevins hit the first pitch she saw to center for a base hit, and promptly stole second. The senior scored on McCoy's single, and Sorgi's triple scored McCoy and chased Wood from the game.
• The fifth inning saw Coltharp single and steal second with no outs. After a strikeout, a grounder moved Coltharp to third, but Gottshall got a grounder to short to retire the side.
• BG threatened in the sixth on back-to-back singles by L'Esperance and McCoy with one out, but UTC reliever Allison Swinford got a strikeout and a fly ball to right.
• The hosts made the game interesting in the bottom of the inning, as a single, a walk and a sac bunt put two runners in scoring position with one down. Both runners scored on a single up the middle by Cameren Swafford, who took second on the throw to the plate.
• But, Gottshall struck out both Kendall Andrews and Coltharp to avoid further damage.
• Swinford worked around a two-out walk to Loyola in the seventh, but Gottshall made sure there were no walk-off heroics, working a drama-free bottom of the seventh. She struck out pinch-hitter Jenice Casanas, then got Aly Walker to hit a fly ball directly to Sorgi in left. When Emma Sturdivant hit a nubber to the right side, first baseman Dees picked up the ball and stepped on the bag for the final out.
• Four players had multiple-hit games for the Falcons, who pounded out 11 hits in the win. McCoy was 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring twice and driving in a run.
• L'Esperance and Everett each went 2-for-4, with Everett scoring a run and driving home a pair. Blevins went 2-for-5 with a stolen base and a pair of runs scored.
• Loyola had a walk and a double, and Sorgi had a triple, a run and two RBI.
• Gottshall picked up the win in relief, moving to 2-1 on the young season. She allowed two runs and four hits in six innings, walking two and striking out nine.
• Wood took the loss for the Mocs, surrendering all seven BG runs along with nine hits in three-and-a-third innings of work.
