February 27, 2020 | Women's Tennis
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University tennis program will compete in the Illinois State Invitational this coming weekend along with Milwaukee, Dayton and host Illinois State. The Falcons will first face Milwaukee on Saturday (Feb. 29) for a 2 p.m. first serve with Sunday's opponent being dependent on Saturday's results. Bowling Green is coming off a 1-1 weekend that moved the team to a 3-3 record in the spring.Â
Last Time Out
The Falcons are coming off their first two-match weekend of the spring season, facing St. Francis last Friday (Feb.21) and then Indianapolis on Sunday (Feb. 23). Bowling Green began the weekend by hosting St. Francis in a match that ended in a 6-1 win for the Orange and Brown. Due to numbers, St. Francis had to forfeit No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles, easing the load for the Falcons to pick up the win. From there, Bowling Green traveled to go head-to-head with the No. 4 team in Division-II, Indianapolis. The Falcons put up a fight, claiming two singles wins, but ended the day on the short end of a 5-2 final, placing the team at 1-1 on the weekend.Â
Mulling Over Milwaukee
The Panthers are coming off a win at Northern Iowa in a 4-3 final that moved Milwaukee's record to 5-4 on the season and went down as their first road win of the season. The match against the Falcons on day one of the invitational will be the fourth straight road match for Milwaukee, being 1-2 over those matches, falling to Bradley and Drake before their most recent win. In home matches, the Panthers hold a 4-0 record, including having two sweeps, coming against Cardinal Stritch and Western Illinois. Milwaukee also faced one MAC team, traveling to oppose Northern Illinois, a match that NIU won 4-3.Â
Inspecting Illinois State
Depending on the results of Saturday, the Falcons could face either Illinois State or Dayton on Sunday. Hosting the weekend, Illinois State is coming off three consecutive road matches in which they lost the most recent two against SIUE and Butler. The two losses moved the Redbirds record to 4-4 in the spring. As for at home, Illinois State holds a 2-1 record, topping Eastern Illinois and Western Illinois while falling to UIC. The Redbirds have yet to face a common opponent with the Falcons. Bowling Green and Illinois State have met once before in program history, facing on Feb. 19, 1995 in a match that went to the Falcons in a 6-3 final.Â
Digging Into Dayton
As stated above, Bowling Green's match for Sunday could be either Illinois State or Dayton. The Flyers have had a rough start in the spring season, currently standing at 0-9 heading into the weekend. Most recently, UD fell to two MAC teams as well as a common opponent in Cleveland State. Western Michigan bested Dayton 4-0 followed by Miami winning 6-1. As for last weekend, Cleveland State won 5-2 over the Flyers, being a team that the Falcons topped 6-1. The Falcons just faced the Flyers last season with Bowling Green coming out with a 7-0 sweep.
Checking The Record Book
Starting in singles play, Ayumi Sasaki can continue to climb the ranks. Currently tied for 28th in program history with 50 career singles wins, Sasaki can break that tie and take sole possession of 28th this weekend. Moving to doubles, Marharita-Sophia Tavpash can make a move as well. As of now, Tavpash is tied for seventh with 74 career doubles wins and could take control of the spot solely. Tavpash can also make a move in combined career wins, now with 127 for a tie at 20th. With four wins on the line this weekend, Tavpash could jump as high as a tie for 16th at the conclusion of play.Â
