Flashes Pull Away in Second Half
February 05, 2020 | Women's Basketball
Falcons fall, 61-47, in Kent
The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team took a one-point lead into the half, but a third-quarter surge by Kent State University proved to be too much for the Falcons to overcome on Wednesday night (Feb. 5). The Golden Flashes came away with a 61-47 win at the M.A.C. Center.
The Falcons' total of 47 points was a season low. BGSU led by a 28-27 score at halftime, but the hosts scored the first eight points of the second half and outscored the Falcons, 18-4, in the third quarter.
Lindsey Thall scored a game-high 19 points, including 14 in the second half, for the Golden Flashes, while teammate Asiah Dingle added 16 off the bench. For the Falcons, no player scored in double digits, although four scored seven points or more.
Sophomore Kadie Hempfling, who battled foul trouble all night, had nine points in 18 minutes of action, while junior Angela Perry and fourth-year Falcon Caterrion Thompson had eight each.
Freshman Olivia Trice scored seven points and led the Orange and Brown with four assists. Trice played 31 minutes, the highest total of her young collegiate career.
Another freshman, Elissa Brett, led the Falcons with 10 rebounds, tying her career high in that category. Thompson had nine boards on the night.
Brett made the first start of her collegiate career on Wednesday. She had come off of the bench in 19 of BGSU's first 20 games, missing one game this season due to injury.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"I thought our defensive effort was really good, especially in the first half. Our third quarter was where the game was lost, so we've got to figure out how to fix that and move forward."
FIRST-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• The Flashes took a 5-0 lead on a Thall three-pointer, and after Hempfling got the Falcons on the board, a Megan Cater three-ball gave the hosts an 8-2 lead.
• Hempfling popped out top and knocked down a triple, but Nila Blackford came right back with a layup. The teams traded buckets, with Dingle's layup moments later giving KSU a 14-9 lead.
• After that bucket, however, the Falcons answered with a 13-0 run, holding KSU scoreless for over eight minutes (8:11, to be exact).
• Thompson hit a driving shot off glass, and Perry's pass found Trice for a corner three that tied the score. BG quickly got a stop, and with the Falcons running, Trice was fouled as she took a pass from Brett. Trice's free throws gave BG a 16-14 lead.
• Thompson's pull-up jumper capped the first quarter scoring and gave the Falcons a four-point advantage after 10 minutes.
SECOND-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• Neither team scored for over two minutes, before Trice lobbed the ball inside to Perry for a layup. After a KSU turnover, Trice drove past her defender for a layup and a 22-14 lead.

• Junior Mari Hill hit a driving scoop shot, and Brett's mid-range jumper gave BG a 26-20 lead, but the hosts answered with a 7-0 run. Clare Kelly and Dingle scored in the paint, and Thall's free throws gave KSU a 27-26 lead.
• But, Thompson's nifty pass found Hill cutting toward the hoop for a layup, and BG got a defensive stop to take a 28-27 lead into the intermission.
THIRD-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• For the second-straight quarter, neither team scored in the first two-plus minutes. Then, however, Thall hit back-to-back three-pointers – the second from well beyond the arc – and a steal and layup gave KSU an 8-0 run and a 35-28 lead.
• The Falcons used a timeout, but could not stop the run, as a turnover gave the ball back to the Flashes and resulted in a Blackford layup. Finally, Perry scored inside to snap that run, but the hosts scored the next six points, with two layups by Dingle making it a 43-30 game.
• Hempfling muscled home a shot in traffic, but Thall scored inside to restore the 13-point margin after 30 minutes of action.
